[Resolved] Can't load login/greeter after changing "3D acceleration" setting

Post by odoumas »

Virtualbox: 5.2.16 with guest additions (GA)
Guest: Xubuntu 16 64bit, 4 GB memory
Host: Mac OS X 10.13.6 64bit, 8 Gb memory

I've been using virtualbox with xubuntu for some months now with no problems at all. After I tried to DISABLE 3D hardware acceleration, the login screen never pops up, but i can enter a terminal using ctrl+alt+F1. Also I can login normaly in recovery mode. I tried reinstalling GA with no success so far. Re-enabling 3D acceleration didn't help either.

It's definately a graphics related problem though. Booting by using an edited GRUB entry (press e on GRUB menu)

Code: Select all

nosplash --verbose text
shows

Code: Select all

Failed to start Detect the Available GPUs and deal with any system changes
glxinfo just returns "Error: Unable to open Display".

The problem was that i had set a custom resolution for the greeter/login screen, and for some reason after I disabled the 3D accleleration it couldn't find the specific mode(resolution) so it crashed. Modifying the appropriate configuration file solved the issue.
