[WorksForMe] Enable 3D cause ubuntu not working

Post by Rasp »

I trying to use Ubuntu 16.04 on virtualbox with enabling 3D option but black screen result that I am stuck on black screen before accessing to login screen. If I disable 3d I can pass through login page and easily run ubuntu with the problem of slow processing graphic either moving windows or running simple program that generate new screen to display something. How can I fix this?

My OS : MacOS High Sierra 10.13.5
Virtualbox Version : Version 5.2.12 r122591 (Qt5.6.3)

I have done installed guest addition via `sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-utils`

You can try updating the Guest Additions to match the VirtualBox version, but speaking frankly, your host's 3D support is not exactly cutting edge technology (OpenGL 2.1 is from 2006, and Intel OpenGL support has a poor reputation).

You have allocated memory to the guest that you don't have available on the host. Your options are: a) allocate less memory to the guest, b) close some applications on the host, or c) buy some more memory for the host. I would set the RAM for the guest to 4GB.

Your CPU only has two physical cores (the thing that VirtualBox cares about) and you have allocated them both to the guest. This may result in resource starvation of the host which will affect performance.

When you do manage to boot and login to the guest then ideally you should update the guest additions to the 5.2.12 versions. By running the apt-get install command it looks as though you may have pulled the guest additions from the Ubuntu repository. You should purge those from your system and use the ones that came as part of your VirtualBox installation using "Devices" -> "Insert Guest Additions CD Image..." from the menu.

My crystal ball is currently broken. If you want assistance you are going to have to give me all of the necessary information.
Please don't ask me to do your homework for you, I have more than enough of my own things to do.

My setting is Setting >> System >> Motherboard >> Base Memory = 4096 MB and log report is
00:00:01.311524 Host RAM: 16384MB (16.0GB) total, 7027MB (6.8GB) available
00:00:01.413560 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000100000000 (4 294 967 296, 4 096 MB, 4.0 GB)
00:00:01.413852 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000008000000 (134 217 728, 128 MB)
Is this correct?

I have try change setting in Setting >> System >> Processor >>Processor(s) = 1 CPU (previous is 2), but problem still the same.
Result

I am trying to install via "Devices" -> "Insert Guest Additions CD Image..." but error still same. Redo this step again cause the following error, which can be fix by remove attach disk in setting. Replete installing Guest Additions shown the same error as I posted.
Unable to insert the virtual optical disk /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso into the machine Ubuntu.

Could not mount the media/drive '/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED).

After trying with all possible solution I found on this website, I still not able to fix the problem. I decided to reinstall virtualbox then create new Ubuntu machine then set 3D before install ubuntu then install GA after first boot then it work! I may accidentally mess up virtual box setting somehow.

Glad you got it going. Marking as [WorksForMe] and moving to "Linux Guests" from "OSX Hosts".
