I have CentOS 7 guest on Win7 host and I can't record sound on guest, although playback works.
The symptoms are: recording programs hang and a .wav file doesn't grow. I tried "arecord test.wav" and "sox -d test.wav".
The virtual card is AC97. The default host recording device is stereo mix.
I also tried Win2008 guest. In it "sox.exe -d test.wav" records 4 times slower (the displayed clock goes slowly) and the clips are shorter.

- The version of VirtualBox you are using, and whether you have installed the Guest Additions (in the guest).
5.2.8 r121009 / additions installed from disc
- Host & Guest make and version including 32 or 64 bit, and the amount of memory available to both.
