Keyboard and mouse stopped working after routine guest additions upgrade

Post by bsobhani »

Host: Windows 10
Guest: Debian 8

I inserted the CD and installed guest additions and when I rebooted the guest machine, the keyboard and mouse do not work so I am unable to get past the login screen. However, I am able to use the keyboard when I boot into recovery mode. I tried uninstalling guest additions from recovery mode, but the uninstall.sh file in the /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-5.2.8 folder is completely blank and is 0 bytes (although it is present). I know guestadditions was at least partially installed because full screen works, so I think if I can figure out how to uninstall it or disable it it may be a first step to getting my guest OS inputs working again. I tried mounting the guest additions cd image in recovery mode (in order to uninstall guest additions), but I am getting a "unknown filesystem type iso9660" error. I also have tried apt-get uninstall virtualbox*

How can I disable or remove guest additions when the guest additions uninstaller is not working?

We're going to need to see a VM log from a complete VM run:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe error / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
