After trying:

VirtualBox-5.1.31-119103-Linux_amd64.run

and

VirtualBox-5.2.1-119176-Linux_amd64.run

I have not been able to get the clipboard function working.

:D

In order to better understand the problem you need to submit some more information. Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.
  • Follow a "start the VM from cold-boot" / "observe error" / "shutdown the VM" cycle.
  • With the VM shut down completely (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form).
Oh, and I need detailed information about Windows. "Windows 10" only is not enough these days...

VirtualBox VM 5.2.0 r118431 win.amd64 (Oct 18 2017 06:24:56) release log
00:00:25.243085 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 5.0.18 r106667 '5.0.18_Ubuntu'
You not only have the matching additions, you have the Ubuntu guest additions installed. You have to remove the Ubuntu additions from the guest. Then install the Guest Additions that come with your installation by using the menu "Devices" ยป "Insert Guest Additions CD Image..." and run the installer in Ubuntu. For more information, see ch. 4.2 of the user manual.

That's the version that breaks the desktop. Not installing that one again. If you know how to remove the existing guest additions that I didn't install that would be helpful. Otherwise I was just trying to give you guys some helpful feedback. It's not a requirement for the clipboard to work.
