Hi Michael, so why this Ubuntu 17,10 quietly work with internal VBox kernel modules and internal userland client packages?

With this configuration, as I said, pretty much everything do work (but KDE Kwin that keep crashing).
As you can see everything is loaded, everything is Ubuntu Virtualbox software revision and in this configuration there are no apparent crashes.
Hope this help!

/proc/maps for the GNOME Shell process when things are working would be of interest too. And whether the system is running X.Org or the Wayland version of GNOME Shell.

This system, upgraded from 17.04, defaulted to Xorg like 17.04 was.
Running processed in this very moment.

The machine is totally stable, during boot up no black screen of death.
If I revert the machine to the Oracle VB configuration snapshot, made after removing the built in Ubuntu software and modules and installed Oracle VB guest addiitions linked in the Oracle download page, I do have the stuck black screen of death on gdm3 loading. As I said, Lightdm will pass the boot screen and it will die with black screen on the gnome-shell load. If I do load LXDE as graphical environment or Openbox, it will work.
Related with the requested /proc/map related with the gnome-shell, I don't understand what you mean.
max@ubuntu1710vb:~$ /proc/map
bash: /proc/map: File o directory non esistente
max@ubuntu1710vb:~$ ls -al /proc/map
ls: impossibile accedere a '/proc/map': File o directory non esistente
Just tell me the command you need me to issue and I will do it for you.
Hope this helps

That confirms my suspicion. When the Ubuntu-supplied Additions are in use Ubuntu starts an X11 session and not a Wayland one. Unfortunately no one has been able to tell me so far what makes Ubuntu (and other distributions!) make this choice. I will most likely disable 3D for Linux guests for the next release, since we do not have enough free developer time at the moment to make it work with recent Linux systems.

Hello Michael, they probably do that, in fact even putting the string
WaylandEnable=true
on the gdm3.conf file it dpoesn't enable Wayland, always Xorg.
Disable 3D could me an idea, then the problem is the whole system become slower with no accelleration.
Then if you do not have internal resources to handle this problem, it could be the right solution.
In this case I will wait for Ubuntu upgrade of them tools.

Hello,
My experience is similar. I've been running Windows 10 Host (1709) and a Linux Mint 17.2 guest for ages. Everything was fine when on VBox 5.1.28 with the 5.1.28 Linux GA. I upgraded to VBox 5.2 on the host - upgrade itself was fine, and my guest came up fine with the 5.1.28 GA. I then saw the red warning on the web site, and installed the 5.2.1 118918 GA into my Linux Mint 17.2 guest. Installed fine, but when I rebooted, I got the graphical logon window OK, but after logging on, I just get a totally black desktop screen. CTRL+ALT+F1 allows logon to the text terminal, VM is not crashed.
I then shut it down, and on a hunch, disabled 3D acceleration in the guest properties. VM now booted and the GUI desktop came up fine after logon, but with the expected "Cinnamon may run slow due to no hardware acceleration" message.
Finally, I installed the VBox 5.1.30 GA (available here:
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.1.30/), shutdown the VM, re-enabled 3D acceleration, and then booted the guest - came up fine.
Clearly, the 5.2 GA has an issue, and it has not been resolved by the 5.2.1 118918 GA upgrade either. Until the GA package is fixed in a future (5.2.2?) version, you might want to replace the red warning on the download page and advise people to remain on their current 5.1.x GA instead.

Hopefully you just mean "for GNOME / whatever" rather than across the board, yes? Bugs notwithstanding, the GL support is adequate and thus valuable for plenty of apps for users on LTS releases with sensible DEs (MATE, probably XFCE, etc).

That's what I hope too...
Here's what I've been able to gather from own experience and other people's forum posts:
- One problem seems to be that there's now some version of the VirtualBox guest kernel modules shipped with Ubuntu 17.10 and variants (causing incompatibilities, noted in many threads on this forum)
- The right path seems to be removing these modules (included in the kernel package -> should be manually removed from /lib)
- After doing that, installing guest additions succeeds
- However, Ubuntu 17.10 with Gnome had problems even after that with GDM freezing during boot, spamming VERR_BUFFER_OVERFLOW errors to journal (I would link a relevant forum post but the forum won't let me. The reports should be googleable however). This is after enabling 3D acceleration.
- Then I tried Ubuntu MATE 17.10. It seems to be very sluggish at first, possibly due to software rendering. I installed the newest GA's (5.2.1-118918). Still sluggish despite enabling 3D acceleration. Then I changed the compositor from the default Marco software compositor to Compiz (can be selected in Mate Tweak tool). It's a HW accelerated compositor, and it's performing really fast and smoothly now.
These are my findings with VirtualBox 5.2.1 on a macOS 10.13.1 host on a 2017 MBP.
Conclusion: 3D acceleration is very useful for some guests, but e.g. GDM on Ubuntu seems to cause those errors, effectively preventing the 3D acceleration from working.
Let me know if you'd like more information about any specific issue I mentioned. My intent was to tell you that there are already some identified problems (like the preinstalled modules) as well as error messages in situations where the 3D acceleration fails. But still the acceleration remains pretty useful for some guests.

It does but the UI also feels slightly more sluggish.

I still have all of these issues.
I have also installed VBoxGuestAdditions_5.2.1-118918.iso, done a reinstall of unity and ubuntu desktop using apt-get and disabled 3D in the options box however, the GUI continues to not work.
- I can log in via a console ctrl+alt+F3 and I am able to run command line programs however, that doesn't help me for any day to day work that I require the GUI for.
So, this is a bust for me. I now need to find a way to downgrade to a working version if anyone has any ideas on what works with Ubuntu 17.10 ??

I'm testing on a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04.1 with 3D acceleration enabled. Installing guest additions v.5.2.2, results in a frozen screen after login. Disabling 3D-acceleration in the virtual machine's settings "solves" the issue, as do restoring from a snapshot and installing guest additions v.5.1.30 instead. The latter seems to be the preferable option to me since it doesn't sacrifice 3D acceleration.

Thank you, thank you shades_aus!
At first I thought I had done something to destroy my Ubuntu install, but after backing all the way out to a fresh install snapshot (seven levels up), I realized it had to be a VirtualBox issue. Indeed, disabling 3d worked! ... running VBox 5.2.2 on Win10.

I just updated the development series test builds (not yet the 5.2 ones)[1]. The Guest Additions build there should contain an additional fix for the Linux guest hangs with 3D enabled.

Hello,
Thank you for the update!
If I understand correctly, we should try the latest 5.1 development build?

No, the latest development snapshot.
