Unable to get into Ubuntu 17.04 after upgrade to VBox 5.1.28

Post by jnb »

I have just upgraded Windows host from VBox 5.1.26 to 5.1.28. One image which is Ubuntu 16.04 is fine, but the other image which is Ubuntu 17.04 will not complete boot.

1. Upgraded VBox to 5.1.28 --- all went well.
2. Upgraded ExtPack to 5.1.28 --- all went well.
3. Successfully logged into both VBoxes at this point.
4. Did an Insert Guest Additions CD Image... for 5.1.28 in each box --- seemed to go fine. Rebooted (have also rebooted Windows host). Since then:
5.a. Ubuntu 16.04 image --- boots fine, all is well.
5.b. Ubuntu 17.04 image --- gets to Ubuntu "start load" screen. Screen goes blank. Every so often, host window resizes from smaller to larger and back again. Never completes, never get to Ubuntu desktop. When I can see anything, Ubuntu start screen is still there.

I attach the VBox.logs for the faulty 17.04 and for comparison the successful 16.04. It seems to me 17.04 VBox is having trouble with window sizing, presumably from the Guest Additions?

I'm stuck now on how to proceed now to recover my 17.04 VBox? (If the answer is somehow to revert to Guest Additions 5.1.26, you would have to explain how, since I do not get into Ubuntu I cannot do some kind of Insert Guest Additions CD Image... again....)

I'd be much obliged for an answer, as at present I am unable to do any work! Thank you.

For anyone reading this:

This issue became addressed in my post viewtopic.php?f=3&t=84680 on this forum.

The upshot was that there was some kind of non-reproducible problem in the particular image I was upgrading, and not any pathological incompatibility between VBox 5.1.28 & Ubuntu 17.04.
