I created a Ubuntu Server virtual machine. When I start it, it goes to a black screen with a cursor (not flashing) and appears to hang.
I have tried multiple solutions from web searches of the problem, all to no avail.
The end of the log contains the following:

Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
Actually I don't see an issue and the log show a good boot. There have been issues with audio but I don't remember how far back it went and whether or not 5.1.18 had the issue but you can test by disabling the audio in the guest settings. Another thing might be that you need to enable PAE in the guest settings but it should not be necessary with your configuration, but you never know.
Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
I disabled audio. It still hangs. I don't know what PAE is. Can you tell me how to enable it? What else can I do? I need to get this working if possible.

Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
The setting is under the system -> processor in the guest settings. I am not sure that will help or not as I said it should not be needed.
You say the screen of the guest only shows a non-blinking underscore? What happens if you press the hostkey and F2 at the same time? ( hostkey is the right control key by default )

Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
I enabled PAE, no change.
When I hit the host (right ctrl) and F2 keys simultaneously, there is no response.

Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
From all appearances the guest is where the failure is. I would try to re-install and see what happens. I would also suggest that you download a desktop version live cd and see if that boots properly if the re-install does not work for you.
Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
What about the USB errors that I posted from the log in my original post? Could they be causing the problem?

Re: Ubuntu Server hang on startup
No idea. Those errors do not show up in the log file you provided.
