Mint 18.1 "Serena" Unable to connect to Host Serial Port

Post by Professor Joykill »

I am running a Linux Mint 18.1 "Serena" Guest using a Windows 7 Host. I have tried to connect a serial port from COM1, by going to settings, to Serial Ports, choosing COM1, then Selecting Host Device, then making the path COM1:. However when I go into the Guest and try to use serial port /dev/ttyS0 in Putty it says that there is no connection. I have tested the serial port in my Host and it works properly. Any idea how to fix this.

Do you need to disable (red X) your serial port in Windows 7 and reboot?

I seem to recall that if Windows 'claims' the serial port it is dead to the rest of the world. Under Win 7 you can no longer directly talk to the serial port, breaking bunches of stuff that did run OK in this regard under XP.

Way back, I had Win 7 Pro with the official free MS virt solution installed. It would then give you a virtual XP box. Had an Windows app that needed the serial port and talked to it directly.
In that situation, I had to make Win 7 let go of the port before the app in the XP box could work.

HTH.
