Re: Linux VDI images download
This is a great idea. So great that Linux OS'es should release their own VDI's for each new release. That would make users 100% certain that no malicious tampering has occurred (not that I suspect virtualboximages.com of anything but any added step is an added risk).
mmoo9154: the VDI's at http://www.VirtualBoxImages.com/ are up to date.

Re: Linux VDI images download
might be posting in the wrong thread...
can anyone point to a good "howto" which would explain how to install or use the VM images which are linked at the target site? I have searched for info, thinking this must be easy to do, but everything I see talks about manual fiddling with some UUID values in one file or another. Is there no straightforward way to more-or-less import one of these pre-configured VDI images?

Re: Linux VDI images download
VDI format:
Create new VM
VM->Settings->Storage
and replace the VDI with one you downloaded
If your VMs come in OVF format, then it is dead easy:
VBox main GUI->File->Import appliance
Create new VM
VM->Settings->Storage
and replace the VDI with one you downloaded

VBox main GUI->File->Import appliance

Re: Linux VDI images download
Ok, so I tried to follow your directions, but I am missing something important, I think...
step 1) create new VM. I did this with the VB GUI, and selected the proper OS type for the VDI I downloaded. seemed successful.
when I unzipped the pre-configured VM (a FreeBSD version, in this case), there were two files included...a .vdi and a .xml. I moved the .vdi into the VB library area where my other .vdi files live...is this correct?
step 2) VM->Settings->Storage shows me a "storage tree", which lists the .vdi which I just created with the VM
...so, how do I "replace the VDI with one you downloaded"? when I click on what looks to be a "add disk" icon, I get a list of .vdi files, but none are my downloaded one. I tried to manually swap the .vdi files by renaming, but this did not seem to work. when startup the new FreeBSD VM, I get the initial startup context, and it asks from where I want to install (like I have a OS CD or something, which I do not). Is this because I have not appropriately used the .xml I unzipped above? what should I do with this .xml file? (I think this might be the key to bypass the initial OS install dialog. Is there any manual editing of any .xml or other file that will be required?
sorry, but I am just too dense to understand and properly execute your seemingly simple instructions. Can you help me further? I am happy to read any documentation that could explain, but I just cannot find anything comprehensive.
Thanks for your patience and your help.

Re: Linux VDI images download
no renaming.
Just add your downloaded VDI via File->"Virtual Media Manager"

OK. I understand how to add the .vdi to the list. Still don't understand how to get by the install dialog on startup. Do I need to somehow use the .xml file that was included?
again, thanks for your help.

You don't need the XML.

Re: Linux VDI images download
I don't care about the distro, but I do want a PHP development environment.
I would like an image with Netbeans installed and configured to run with Xdebug - which is notoriously difficult to do.

Re: Linux VDI images download
!!! We just passed 200,000 VM activations !!!
We wanted to say "Thank You" to the community for choosing VirtualBoxImages.com for your pre-installed VirtualBox VDIs
Over the past 5 years we have continued to provide CLEAN easy to access VirtualBox VMs
For the past year all new posted VMs are available FREE of charge.
There have been some bumps along the way. Our hosting provider HostGator, decided that we were generating too much traffic for their Unlimited Plan. So we had to find another affordable provider.
Our new provider is substantially more expensive than HostGator's $11.99/month. We now have 1Tb of online storage that should last another year or two.
Recently we have joined CloudFlare to provide site caching and SSL support for the site. With CloudFlares site caching VirtualBoxImages.com pages load much faster, making it easier to use our site.
Thank you again for choosing VirtualBoxImages.com.
A Special thanks to the VirtualBox developers for all their hard work.
