Perhaps I was unclear. By "a recipe" I meant a description of how to reproduce it, starting with creating a new virtual machine and exactly which settings you use, and so on.

By the way, I notice that JustinH mentioned drag and drop. Could that be related in your case? Does disabling it make a difference?

Thanks,

No it is not the same as Justin at all.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure I can re-build this whole machine from scratch, and even then I don't really have an extract reproduction of how this happens.
Is there anything that can be done? Like some logs? error logs? problem logs? Somehow we can track this down?
LIke a debug mode or something?

I see this nearly daily as well and have been searching for a solution. I have only seen it with GNU/Linux guests. Unfortunately the event is random but frequent enough to be very frustrating.
At the moment, this is all I can provide.
What extra logging should I enable in order to (maybe) catch evidence of what is happening?

Environment
  • VirtualBox: 5.1.28, no Extension Pack
  • Host: Win 7 64bit Enterprise
  • Guest: KDE Neon 64bit, 3D Acceleration off, GA installed, mouse is not in a USB capture
Steps
  1. Ensure mouse integration is set on guest
  2. Start guest
  3. Login
  4. Switch between guest and host, clicking, dragging windows etc
  5. At some juncture the guest will lose the mouse (i.e. no longer responds to clicks or pointer position)
Workaround
  • Disable mouse integration

Is stopping all "VBoxClient --draganddrop" processes also a workaround? If you don't mind loosing clipboard and seamless too, you could just try "killall VBoxClient" from a terminal.

Next time it happens, I will try that. Also a restart of plasmashell.

I just wish I could figure out a consistent set of steps to cause it.

Mouse integration failed whilst the VM had focus (I don't think I did anything unusual, I was just navigating in Dolphin).
I ran "killall VBoxClient" and instantly the mouse started working again (I then started the clipboard and display services).
So yeah, that appears to be another workaround and it's great that that can be done without needing a restart.

Is there any logging for VBoxClient I can turn on or other system logging I should enable?
I'd love to be able to provide the detail needed to fix this.

Right, this is getting really weird.

My mouse has just stopped working. Launch menu, Firefox, Eclipse, Task bar etc all fail to recognise clicks.
But KDE's Alt-Tab? That recognises it just fine.

A restart of plasmashell didn't sort it, but the Alt-Tab switcher still responds to clicks.

I'm still no closer to finding out how to sort it, restarting the VBox client fixes things, but then clipboard sharing etc doesn't work until a restart.

You only need to stop the VBoxClient --draganddrop processes.

That's not exactly an only, having the ability to move things between host and guest is important :)
Also I will try that too next time it happens.
It's very frustrating.

I've got the same Problem, using Win7x64 as host and Linux Mint Mate 18.3 as guest os.

I experience the same thing randomly. I'm pretty certain, that it's related to the clipboard.
For me the workaround is to change the display mode force and back.
e.g. leaving and re-entering full screen mode by pressing Host+F twice.

I've been dealing with this for months. Always results in a hard restart. I skimmed the thread and on a whim went to check my 3d settings. It was off. But I noticed my video scale factor in the VM was set to 110%. Changed it to 100% and the screens resized. No surprise there. But I got focus back! And no hard reset! Guess its a wait and see thing now.

Okay, it was all good util a few clicks i the VM. Everything but mouse is frozen. Mouse moves but never gets focus on anything.

I also have this issue.

Host: win10
Guest: Mint (Ubuntu 14)

I have enabled drag and drop both from guest and to guest vm.

And I found wonderful solution.

When I lost my mouse responding in guest OS I'm going to drag and drop something from HOST to GUEST OS. And mouse go on))

Sorry for my English. I'm from Ukraine.

Guest Ubuntu 17.04
