Unable to install guest additions on Debian guest VM

I have Debian 8.6.0 guest VM and host Windows 7. I insert the guest additions from 'Device>Insert Guest Additons CD image' but when i click run i get this: 'Oops! There was a problem running this software. Unable to locate the program.' Any idea why it doesn't want to install the guest additions? I have run 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade' on the guest but it didn't help. I am using the latest Virtualbox version 5.1.18.

Moving to Linux guest.

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Also from the guest post the following:
/var/log/vboxadd-install.log

I was able to install the guest additions but first i had to install 'make', 'gcc' and linux-headers packages. That was the problem.
