Virtualbox 5.1.18 - Fixing UI lag without enabling 3D acceleration on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

I'd like to know if there is a way to fix the UI lag on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS without having to enable 3D acceleration. In order to launch any Gazebo simulations for ROS (robotics), 3D acceleration has to be turned off, otherwise I encounter an exit error that I've been unable to troubleshoot. Any help would be appreciated.

Not much you can do. Without 3D acceleration all rendering is done with software and is CPU intensive.
