debian testing amd64 wont boot after install

Post by pjlbyrne »

Hi,

the installation is fine, but on boot the screen prints:

/dev/sda1: recovering journal
/dev/sda1: clean, 148954/458752 files, 1050631/1834752 blocks

and nothing else happens

VirtualBox 5.1.16 r113841
Host: Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1, 64-bit, 8GB RAM
Guest: debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

I can start it in recovery mode.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Patrick

Which DT environment did you choose to install or is this a core install with no DT?

When it looks like your guest is not doing anything does pressing ( right ctrl + F1 ) open a tty window?

What is a DT? I googled for it but it's not clear what it is. Sorry.

Right-Ctrl + F1 does nothing.

DT = DeskTop

The log shows a normal boot and then a shut down. I suspect something in the DeskTop (DT). Can you enable 3D acceleration in the guest and see if that does anything. Also you can edit the boot parameter and remove the splash to see where the OS actually stops. Finally you might be able to get further by updating to 5.1.18.

Keep in mind that OSes marked as testing or SID ( still in development ) often have issues of their own which require experienced users to be able to work around the issues. Usually fixed in a week or so but can cause the kind of issue you are seeing.

Tried it. No change

I edited /etc/default/grub and uncommented '#GRUN_TERMINAL=console' but that just changes the GRUB menu to text mode, same problem after grub

I tried that and installed debian-8.7.1-amd64-netinst.iso - and it worked!

I suspect it is this. Thanks for your assistance.
