Network Service is not getting up in RHEL7

Post by karthick87 »

Hello All,

I am using the below version of Oracle VirtualBox on top of Windows 10 Operating System.
VirtualBox Graphical User Interface
Version 5.1.6 r110634 (Qt5.5.1)
Copyright © 2016 Oracle Corporation and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.
I have around 5 Vms running Centos 6.5 already and I have created a new VM today (RHEL7). The installation went fine without any issues, however the network is not getting up. Below are the settings of my RHEL7 VM.

Code: Select all

15-Mar-17 [12:33:56.24] VBoxManage list natnets

That means that your RHEL is not getting an IP address, nor can it browse the internet, nor can it ping other VMs on the NATNetwork. Is that the case? Or is it the case that the port forwarding is not working?

You gave specific details about the setup. Nice. Could you do the same for the symptoms?

Apologies for not providing the actual issue details. So the RHEL7 machine is not getting the IP Address.. Please find the below screenshots confirming the same.

Also I am facing an issue installing 'VBoxGuestAdditions', while trying to install I am getting the following error message.

Code: Select all

Could not mount the media/drive 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED).

From your first post I see in the Network settings that the MAC address is 08:00:27:79:36:d9. From the 2nd post I see a different address 08:00:27:af:17:0d, the same that I see in the "showvminfo" output. What have you done? If you messed up with your networks and *you* can't get it to work, I would start fresh. Unless you want to untangle whatever you've done. I'm not a RHEL expert, I usually leave things at the default. And everything just works...

Also, for your other problem, if your search for "VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED site:forums.virtualbox.org" does not give you an answer in the first page of results, then open a new thread. One thread per problem please.

Ok so for the original issue (1st), I have just disabled the NetworkManager service and enabled network service and rebooted the machine to see if that is making any change. That's the reason for the interface name and MAC Address change, apart from that, the issue is still the same.

Apart from the fact that there is a mismatch of what "hardware" you present to the VM, and what "hardware" you're configuring? They need to be the same...

I have created a new VM to see if that helps but hitting the same issue, the VM is not getting the IP Address. Posting the new results below.

Aren't RHEL and CentOS siblings? The reason I'm bringing this up is because there is another thread (Why am I getting "Curl (6) Could not resolve host" after I did a "yum -y update"?) that exhibits the same problems.

I'm linking the two by posting a message to each thread. I don't want to merge the two, because it's going to be a mess. Simply everyone involved keep an eye on both threads. Just post a "Hey I'm having the same issue" on each other's thread so you'll be notified if a new post gets posted.

Specifically for this thread, I'm moving it to "Linux Guests" from "Windows Hosts", because the problem is on the guest.

It shouldn't, since you're connecting to the NATNetwork, not on the HostOnly network. But, I really don't like the fact that there is no HostOnly network. Did you elect to not install it? If you didn't, then something may have gone wrong with the installation.

Follow the steps below:
  1. Uninstall VirtualBox. Your VMs are going to be untouched.
  2. Download (if you haven't already) the latest VirtualBox and its matching ExtPack. Store them in a common location, i.e. not on "Desktop", or "Documents", but to "Public/Downloads" for example.
  3. Right-click on the installer and select "Run as Administrator". At the end of the installation, choose to "Start Oracle VM VirtualBox". Do not worry if your VMs do not show.
  4. Go to File » Preferences » Extensions. Click on the icon with the orange, down-pointing arrow on the right. Select the ExtPack from the previous steps.
  5. Quit VirtualBox. Re-start VirtualBox as you would normally, i.e. from the Desktop shortcut or the Start menu.

Hello socratis,

So as per your advice, I have removed the VirtualBox and downloaded/installed the latest version.
VirtualBox Graphical User Interface
Version 5.1.18 r114002 (Qt5.6.2)
Copyright © 2017 Oracle Corporation and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.
Now the issue is fixed. But still trying to understand what went wrong, do you have guess what might have went wrong? Also is there a way to backup/restore network settings ? I just wonder, whether some of my network settings got screwed earlier and the re-installation fixed it.

Yes! Windows!

The newer Windows gets, the more restrictive they become. These days it's not enough being an administrator, you have to right-click and "Run as Administrator" to install some key components. Otherwise they silently fail. Until a lot of users complain about that, I don't think that VirtualBox is going to change the installers.

I've actually opened a ticket about this issue (#16003), but there isn't not a lot of interest from what it seems. Actually, it may have the wrong title, and I might have to close that one and open another one. But do read it, it contains actually the collective experience from a lot of us in the forums.

<Slightly off topic>
Funny thing, I found an old game. It shouldn't need to have any special privileges. But, it has the Administrator shield on it, and even when run as administrator, it asks for security clearance! A simple game! So, starting looking into it, I discovered that there is a "manifest" embedded in the program, that no matter what, has to have RunAsAdmin privileges. That's of course independent of the file properties, it's something that you can't change.

I'm in the middle of investigating this (I don't want to be an admin to run a game), but it involves reverse-engineering the program, ripping out the manifest and replacing it with a new one. In that process, I might learn a couple of things about those Windows manifests and possibly offer a solution to the VirtualBox installer problem...

If any Windows programmer is reading this, either leave a comment here or send me a PM about the manifests...
