I am using virtual box version 5.1.14 r112924 to run ubuntu 16.04LTS. I am trying to mount an external hard drive but with no success.
This is what happens when I connect the hard drive:
1- It shows in the launcher bar and when I check with lsblk it shows that it is connected to /dev/sdb1
2- When I click on the launcher icon it takes a long time to giver any response and ends in one of theses messages:
2.1- Unable to mount
2.2- A long error message including "the disk contains an unclean file system external drive"
What I tried so far with no effect:
1- Running ntfsfix on /dev/sdb1
2- Running chkdsk /f in the windows host
I also tried connecting the drive to a Ubuntu host and this seems to work fine.
Could someone please help me fix this problem? Thanks

Re: Mounting external hard drive to linux guest
I really hope you mean a USB hard drive.ShehabElsayed wrote:I am trying to mount an external hard drive
That doesn't look like an external hard drive to me.ShehabElsayed wrote:it shows that it is connected to /dev/sdb1
Please describe in detail the way that you try to get access to the external hard drive. I don't want any diagnostics or programs or checks run. I just need you to tell me, if it is an external USB hard drive, and what steps did you take in VirtualBox to "connect" it.
