Xubuntu 16.10 very slow

Post by loukingjr »

Is there a problem with the 4.8.* Kernel? With guest additions installed the guest is very slow. Details in log.

Hi lou,

I don't seem to have this issue but there are a few things you should look at.
Try selecting the Intel HD Audio instead of the AC97 for the guests audio and see if that makes a difference.
run glxinfo | grep OpenGL in the guests terminal and make sure that the chromium/humper is being used.

Code: Select all

Thanks Perry. I actually had HD audio selected at first. I just forgot to change it back.

OpenGL vendor string: Humper
OpenGL renderer string: Chromium
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Chromium 1.9
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

It's probably an issue with the OSX version of VB. Different guests seem to have different issues. Windows 7 seems to behave the best. Yippee

Yes it is highly possible. The alpha/beta phase usually does not get a lot of love in as much as kernel tuning and the like. Add to that the new Mac OS changes in the latest release is probably not helping a lot. As you know this usually requires a re-write of some of the VBox code and usually does not get a lot of attention until after a release.

Yes. Although, the problems with OSX hosts started with the VB 5.1 release even on El Capitan. What's interesting is Ubuntu 16.04.1 is actually much faster once it's running. However, it takes a very long time to reach the desktop.

FWIW, based on the Mac Hosts section, there are still issues on the previous version of OSX. But we've talked about that recently. 8)

Later.

Yes, there is a problem (the kernel has some interesting bugs). If you can post the output from 'dmesg' in the guest, I can tell you whether you're affected by that or not.

Re: Xubuntu 16.10 very slow

I don't see any obvious problem in that dmesg output. There is a problem with OHCI in the 4.8 kernel which can break OHCI support and take out other devices as well (disable the interrupt they're sharing with OHCI). But that didn't happen in your run, at least not that one time.

Based on what I've seen, I'd say avoid Ubuntu 16.10. The 4.8.0 kernel is just too buggy.

Thanks for checking. At the moment I'm avoiding VB in general. I'm having too many issues running it on a macOS Sierra 10.12 host.

[OffTopic] Really? Could you elaborate so I'll know what's going on? If you don't want to dilute the thread, could you via a PM?

I don't think it has anything to do with Sierra. VBox 5.1.8 is, um, a bit broken. Or is any of that really Sierra specific?

So far we've had very few Sierra-specific complaints. Nothing like El Capitan (or most previous OS X releases) came out.

It's early yet.
It's mainly audio issues. At first I thought it may be that somehow all my guests became corrupted over time. But when I created new guests I was running into the same issues. I'll bite the bullet and try a few new guests.

Audio in 5.1.x has... well... problems. So far the bugs have been simply shifting around, with every fix breaking something else instead. We know about that. If you need audio, I'd at the moment recommend sticking with 5.0.x.

If there are any problems really specific to Sierra, we'd like to know though.
