X11 fails to start on Fedora 24 with 5.1.4 guest additions

Hi,
I have a Fedora 24 VM guest in VB 5.1.4 running on a Windows 7 x64 host. After installing the guest additions X11 no longer starts: the system startup appears to hang at "Starting Switch Root..." Additionally after switching to another virtual console the screen flickers between the first VC and the new VC, to the point where some of the keyboard input is delivered to the first and not the subsequent (makes logging in with a password extremely difficult!). Once logged in I can run "init 2" and the flickering problem goes away.

One of my host computers gets similar results in Ubuntu. Disabling 3D acceleration for the guest VM is the easiest workaround available to me.
