Yep, 4.4.0-31 kernel works for me when USB controller in Virtualbox settings set to USB 2.0 instead of 3.0.

fwiw I tested that kernel and it is indeed that change, so I guess we can close this as solved, since now it's Ubuntus turn to get a fix out

The jsalisbury kernel fixed this problem for me, too.

fwiw - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1604058/ now contains kernel WITH a fix (rather than reverted change for xhci that broke it)

That new kernel doesn't boot for me, with USB 3.0 enabled in vbox.

Kamal added a patch with a fix to the LP bug
http://people.canonical.com/~kamal/lp1604058/

this should be a bootable kernel, he asks people if they can test usb 3.0 functionality with this patch

Thanks Michael

I've the same problem with my current Kubuntu 16.04 guest but to switch
back to USB 2.0 is at most a workaround. I don't know whether the problem
is caused by VBox or the Linux kernel but I went back to 5.0.26 to avoid
that problem. I've already thought 'bout these kinds of starting problems in
a new major release therefore I created a snapshot right before switching
to 5.1

Hope this issue will be fixed somehow. Best Regards,
Martin

Virtualbox-settings and logged the complete startup of the linux-kernel to the file attached.
Because the problem seems to be connected to xhci I disabled USB 3.0 and enabled USB 2.0.
With USB 2.0 the kernel boots, with USB 3.0 it does not.
I hope this helps finding the cause of the problem. Michael.

Hi,

I tested your test kernels and everything is working: no boot hang and USB 3.0 hdds are working with the expected speed.

- so above kernel from Kamal is working and basically be in next kernel update
