Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
How can I get Elementary OS to display Fullscreen and also then use the actual full screen and not the given resolution and the rest stays black, once the VM is started please?
Does something like Seamless Mode exist for Linux Guests?

Moved to Linux Guests.
Did you install the Guest Additions?

Re: Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
As mpack alluded to, you need to install the guest additions. But first, you need to run the following in the Elementary OS terminal…
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential
OSX, Linux and Windows Hosts & Guests
There are three groups of people. Those that can count and those that can't.

OK thank you and sorry for picking the wrong forum!loukingjr wrote:As mpack alluded to, you need to install the guest additions. But first, you need to run the following in the Elementary OS terminal…Code: Select all

What does that command do? How can I know about it? Is that in the manual?
Thank you.

Re: Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
As I mentioned in your other post, this is not a how do I use Linux forum.
And had you looked at the manual, you would see it is indeed in the manual.

No more questions about Linux full stop.
I assumed that since Linux runs in the VM it would be a slightly different procedure but it seems that it does not matter if this is installed on disk or run in a VM, it is 100% the exact same thing, correct?

Re: Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
For the most part running a VM is the same as running an OS on hardware. The commands are the same. Any packages/apps you may want to install install the same way, etc.

Re: Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
What parts do I need to look out for regarding Linux Guests then?loukingjr wrote:For the most part...
Simply wanting to try out various distros, do Office and possibly web dev work with them and while doing so be able to use network shares.
Once comfy with one of the distros happy to dual-boot and then later go Linux full stop.
So if the parts you mention to look out for do not touch any of the mentioned activities (using Office/Libre Office/word processing basically & web dev work/LAMP/WAMP/Sublime Text 3/using localhost to test sites and apps/etc) I can happily find the info somewhere else.
Thank you.

Does VirtualBox support Guest Additions for Elementary OS Freya?
I read here is based on Ubuntu, tough it does not say what version.
Want to avoid installing Guest Additions to find out Seamless Mode won't work because VirtualBox Guest Additions are not supported by Elementary OS Freya.

Re: Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
It doesn't matter. There is only one Guest Additions package for all Linux guests.OraOra wrote:I read here is based on Ubuntu, tough it does not say what version.
What would be the harm? Clone the VM then the worst that can happen is that you waste some minutes.OraOra wrote:Want to avoid installing Guest Additions to find out Seamless Mode won't work because VirtualBox Guest Additions are not supported by Elementary OS Freya.
Or, you can wait for someone else to develop an interest in Elementary OS.

Re: Elementary OS Fullscreen or Seamless Mode
Commercially supported guests are described here:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/serve ... index.html
General basic support here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes
Now the question of whether it will work or not depends on the experience level of the user. If the base of the guest is let's say a supported guest then it might work depending on what the fork did to the base code. So If you want a definite is it supported, I would say no. But that does not mean it will not work.
If I may, it sounds like you want someone to give you advise and that is a good thing. Here is my general advise for users new to Linux and VirtualBox. Use a guest that is well documented and is supported by the forums of the guest OS. This would be Ubuntu, Mint, Etc. Any other fork is usually just a different desktop with sprinkles added and that can be achieved in the base OS once you learn how. The main consideration should always be the base OS and how well they are supported by the OS forum.
As for the seamless question, this is still an experimental feature and from the looks of it will continue to be that way for the foreseeable future, so don't rely on that when selecting a replacement for Windows. It doesn't work well there for some either.

Thank you Perryg.
In fact, invaluable information, really helpful, thank you.
After years of Windows I am wanting to try out other OSes and possibly switch.
Great advice there.
