ASUS r510d many 64-bit linux guests kernel panic on boot

Post by easyA »

Update: see my post on superuser at http://superuser.com/questions/912470/m ... ic-on-boot

Hi, I have been banging my head against this for a while. I have an ASUS R510D laptop (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 4P01ZS5608). I think the ASUS laptop hardware sets may contain some kind of virtualization incompatibility. Some, but not all, 64-bit Linux guests kernel panic on boot. Specifically, I am running a Bodhi Linux (variant of Mint) 64-bit VM that *works*. However, the current 64-bit Minimal Linux Live ISO (which uses an up-to-date kernel as of February 2015) kernel panics (http://minimal.linux-bg.org/). PCLinuxOS does as well. So does GoboLinux. I believe I have tried a few others that give this kernel panic as well. The message is "kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" There is a stack trace printed above the kernel panic. The stack trace appears to descend into functions attempting to identify the 64-bit CPU model. The last function called is "identify_cpu".

I am sick of not being able to run 64-bit kernels. The Minimal Linux Live ISO *DID* boot successfully at least once. I have no idea what I did that got it to boot or subsequently prevented it from booting. I have tried every combination of virtualization and CPU settings in the VM settings. I have experienced this problem with the last two or three versions of VirtualBox (currently 4.24 IIRC) as well as the beta of version 5. The ASUS laptop does not have any virtualization settings available in the BIOS settings (which are a PITA because of UEFI anyway). I have read forum posts that seem to indicate that this problem is common on 64-bit ASUS hardware with AMD and ATI. This laptop supposedly has an internal integrated dual Radeon Crossfire setup. I have read forums that indicate that there is a problem with Realtek wireless drivers and that disabling the onboard wireless in host BIOS prevents the VM kernel panic, but this BIOS has no options for disabling internal wireless. Disabling network adapters and USB in VM settings has no effect.

I know I need to post VirtualBox logs and screenshot of kernel panic. I want to get this posted and am not on the ASUS machine right now. I will attach those to this post later today. Please help!!

Edit:
I believe this machine has the AMD Quadcore A10-5750M APU. This CPU should support AMD-V virtualization.
