Windows 8.1 No bootable medium found

Post by Rusty »

I have installed the VirtualBox version 4.3.26 r98988 and EDQ-12.1.3-Trn2 from Oracle. After the startup splash screen I get FATAL: No bootable medium found!
I've been working on this for a couple of days and the frustration level is kinda hi! Please help.

Did you install a guest?

This is probably a really dumb question but what is a guest? And where do I download one?

Technically EDQ-12.1.3-Trn2 would be a guest and from looking at it briefly it required 6 downloads to install.

The host is the computer you install VirtualBox in. A guest is an operating system you install in VirtualBox.

I thought that EDQ-12.1.3-Trn2 was a guest. I downloaded all 6 files and followed the instructions for creating and installing EDQ-12.1.3-Trn2.ova.
I created the share directory and installed edq_training_assets_12.1.3.
I even created a sample text file share.txt and installed it in shared folders in Oracle VM Box Manager.

Everything I've been able to find is about how to make changes once the vm is up and running but I can't find anything about "No bootable medium found!"

I'm really stuck here. Any advice?

Do I need to install an os in VirtualBox?
I thought that was included with EDQ-12.1.3-Trn2.

I didn't read through the tutorial but an .ova file should contain a virtual disk. Either a .vdi or vmdk. You import .ova files as an appliance in VirtualBox. The error message normally means it can't find the virtual hard drive. Under the storage settings for the guest does it have a virtual drive listed?

not really. there are two .vdi files listed. where did the NewVirtualDisk1.vdi come from?

I decided to go ahead and download and install this which took forever to download because Oracle throttles downloads apparently. (grrrrr :D )

None the less, I noticed that when the appliance is imported it creates a .vmdk file and not a .vdi file as in your screen shot so you must have changed the extension which would make it unbootable.

I also noticed the RAM is preset to 4GB and the install notes say that's for a PC with 8GBs of RAM. 4GBs on an 8GB PC seems much too high. However, it does look like the host PC needs at least 8GBs just to run this.

I removed the NewVirtualDisk1.vdi but it did not make any difference.

That's because your install is incorrect. It seems you changed things trying to get it to work. It should look like this...

If you still have the .ova file, I would delete your current install including Remove Files, then try reimporting the .ova file from the VirtualBox Import Appliance menu selection.

This thread should be under Linux guests btw.
