Since this is a laptop does the GPU on the host have a power saver? One graphics to save power and one higher to afford the 3D rendering?

another issue:

Code: Select all

las@las-ubu:~/host$ sudo mount -t vboxsf shared ~/host
/sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: Protocol error
my laptop doesn't have a gpu, it uses processor's inbuilt graphics. as i said earlier, i also have a dual monitor setup. powersaver mode is off too.

Gessss lets get the first one fixed first. The new error is a protocol error due to the command not being right. hat is another thing and a different ticket please.

Well at this point the guest is being presented everything that it needs but is failing to switch over to the VBox 3D acceleration. All install logs show that 3D is installed and available so it has to be something in the guest. Give me the exact name of the install ISO and I will see what happens here.

At the risk of repeating myself…
loukingjr wrote:FWIW I don't think 'buntus 14.04, 14.10 etc will run on 4.3.12. they use the 1.17 xserver.
At least they won't on a OSX host and someone with a Windows host was complaining they couldn't use the latest 'buntus because they were stuck on 4.3.12 because of the security issues.

I installed the same version and will detail the process in a minute, but the default version of 14.04.1 still used 1.15.1 and should work in 4.3.12. Plus Xorg shows that it is accepting his build. IIRC 1.17 started at 14.10 but I could be wrong as well.

Code: Select all

ubuntu@ubuntu-14:~$ Xorg -version

X.Org X Server 1.15.1
Release Date: 2014-04-13
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 3.2.0-37-generic i686 Ubuntu
Ubuntu-14.04-32-novtx.png
Ubuntu-14.04-32-novtx.png (69.11 KiB) Viewed 2476 times
Steps are as follows:

1) create the guest and only enable 3D and set vRam to 32MB and select the install source. ( I did turn off VT-x for this test but you would not )
2) on boot and clicking install only selected to upgrade packages during install and add 3d party drivers leaving everything else set to default.
3) rebooted and opened a terminal at which time is installed dkms build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
4) selected the insert guest additions from the device tab and ran the install in terminal.
5) rebooted and there you see the results.

Note: I don't know what else you may have done but the above should work and if it does not then it must be something about your host that is stopping it.

Should I choose to install updates and 3rd party apps during installation?

Should I do ctrl alt f1 to open terminal?

Well the proper way would be (host+F1) so it works on the guest but are you saying that you do not even have the unity launcher on first install after a reboot?

yes. so far i had to install gnome and use that for all this pipe cleaning. The only difference could be i never chose to install 3rd party apps but am not sure how significant it is.

my fault. the switch occurred with the 14.10 versions and the version changed to 1.16 not to 1.17. Not sure what I was looking at.

I'll hush now.

The drive may not be mounted in the tty session. You need to mount it first then run from the mounted folder with sudo.
