Fatal Could not read from boot medium for any .iso

Post by alex::oracle »

Hi all,

I have a Lenovo X240 with Win7 on it.
I installed virtualBox (4.3.12 due to conflicts of the newer version with trend office scan virus protection) and corresponding extension pack.

The X240 comes without CD/DVD drive. I therefore connected downloaded installation isos (several from debian and kubuntu) via settings>storage>controller IDE as suggested in the docu.
In addition, i checked the boot order under settings>system>bootorder.

However, when booting the virtual machine (for installation of the guest) I always get 'Fatal could not read from the boot medium'.
I tried to rename/move the iso's.
I even tried to boot from USB stick.
No success.

Surely, the isos burned on CD and plugged in my other computer boot...

So what to try next?

I assume you've been attaching the .isos by clicking on the Empty icon?

1. Click on the CD Device.
2. Click on the CD contents.
3. Select you ISO.

Yes but they stated that they don't have a real CD/DVD drive in this host. Use the pull down and select the ISO file exactly the same way that socratis stated.

Yeah, I know. The picture was from an older post. Recycling ;) I hope that if they got to step 3, it would be obvious.

Now I'm confused. :)
I don't have a CD drive in the Mac I posted the pic from nor do I have one in my MacBook Air but I still have a CD/DVD drive in the settings. Which is where I always attach .isos.

loukingjr, Perryg's comment was directed to my attachment, where you can clearly see in (3) there is a "Host Drive" selected.

I wasn't sure. I thought he might be talking to both of us. :)

But, how or why do you have a Host Drive available to select from? I don't remember that option being available.

Because I have an actual, physical CD in my Mac and you don't.

That would make sense if I didn't have two other Macs with CD drives. It's not important however.

edit: Oh wait, NOW I get it. It's just been so long since I've run VirtualBox on those. (Remembers now). :)

This was what I did (as stated in my 1st post).
I connected the iso's as 'virtual' cd/DVD as you suggested (and how the manual explains).
The error occurs nevertheless.

That's not what you said later…

that is correct and in the system tab>motherboard>boot order you do have the CD/DVD listed first correct?
