Hang/Crash when trying to choose disc (VBox 4.3.18)

Postby Thomas_123 » 14. Oct 2014, 22:21

Host: Windows 7 64-bit
VBox: 4.3.18
Guest: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Similar to another post titled "Hang/Crash when trying to choose disc" (can not post url_ because first day on the forum..)

Steps:
1. Start VM
2. Try to mount an ISO: Devices menu > CD/DVD devices
3. VirtualBox hangs forever when clicking on "CD/DVD devices" (no dialog opened), the only solution is to Power off the machine

Best,
Thomas

I have the same issue with different Windows Guests:

Host: Windows 7 64-bit
VBox: 4.3.18
Guests: Windows 7 64-Bit, Windows Server 2008 64-Bit

See Minimum information needed for assistance.

Do you have the extension pack installed?

Yes extension pack 4.3.18 is installed. I could reproduce this yesterday on another Windows 7 64-Bit host.

It´s the same issue which was discussed here some time ago:
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10189

It appears to be independent of what OS is running on the guest. The problem doesn´t occur when selecting an iso with the Virtualbox Manager GUI, only when using the console window of a VM.

I found out what caused the problem. The special character "®" in the file name of an ISO.

I edited the VirtualBox configuration file C:\Users\%username%\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml and cleared the list of remembered ISO´s:
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/RecentListCD" value=""/>

Now I have no more problems to mount ISO´s.

Good Job although I'm surprised the character caused a problem. You can also remove remembered .isos from the list in the VirtualBox Virtual Media Manager.

fwiw I inserted the ® character into a Linux .iso and had no problem opening it in VirtualBox.

yes, it seems it wasn´t the "®" character... the problem is back :-(

I also tried to completely remove and reinstall V4.3.20 (including extension pack), unfortunately without success.

I had the same issue. I had previously used an iso named ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso. If I removed the '.' character between 14 and 04 in the path listed in C:\Users\%username%\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml I got it to work. Could it be that the dialog gets confused by multiple '.' characters in iso name?

I use Windows 7 as host.

I doubt it, though it would be easy enough to test. I would be thinking more about the complete path, and how long it is. Also, what exactly is the default path? Does it for example refer to a volume that isn't currently mounted?

I am still having this issue  It seems to occur rarely because only a few people are reporting it. Ticket #10189 describes the same issue.

I have one Windows 7 64-bit host where the problem occurs permanently. Another Windows 7 64-Bit host where I can reproduce it after some time, but it doesn´t occur permanently. And a third Windows 7 64-Bit host (with older hardware) where the problem doesn´t occur. All hosts are running Virtualbox 4.3.26 with Extension Pack 4.3.26. When I remember correctly this issue occurs since V4.3.16.

Is there something I can do to troubleshoot this with your assistance? I tried the debug mode, but the debug console freezes at the same time when the VM freezes.

Needless to say, we can only fix this if we can reproduce it (and we can't -- don't have the magic mix of ingredients), or someone needs to provide a crash dump from a system where the problem does occur. See https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump

Hello michaln,

thanks for your help and advice. I have created the attached minidump (by using Process Explorer) from the process of a VM after I tried to choose an iso and it hung. Maybe you can analyze it and see what´s the problem

I'm not sure yet, but you can possibly reproduce it by trying to open an iso under a path named "D:\DL\". It seems this could somehow be the cause of the issue.

You should attach a Vbox.log of a hung/crashed VM.

Hello mhanor,

ok, i attached it. I compared the log before and after the VM hung. It doesn´t change when the VM hangs and I close the console window, no lines are added after the crash.
