Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 64-bit guest install reboots host

I have Win7 32-bit installed under bootcamp on my MacBook Pro (i7).

Trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.2 64-bit guest, the guest starts, and lets me select the language, shows the install menu, but then the host system reboots when i start the installation. This is always reproducible at the same point. The last line in the log is:

00:00:03.720147 Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from CD-ROM...
00:00:03.771204 Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0, pvVRAM=06440000 w=640 h=480 bpp=16 cbLine=0x500, flags=0x1

All VM settings are the defaults for a Ubuntu 64-bit install (I just created the new VM and attached the downloaded ISO).
VT-x is enabled, and works fine with other VMs.
Video memory is set to 12MB, 1 Monitor, 2D/3D acceleration both disabled.

Any ideas?

thx
Steve

The default settings for a Ubuntu guest are not sufficient for 12.0.4 LTS. You should have at least 32MB for video, 2GB for ram etc. Without 3D acceleration it will be slow and if you happen to have a Retina display there will be other issues.

Apologies.. I realised that I forgot to mention this is Ubuntu Server (the console only version). The install file is: ubuntu-12.04.2-server-amd64.iso

In fact setting PAE didnt help things, and it killed my host shortly after. Trying a few different memory combinations didnt yield any improvements. Bumping up video ram to 32mb didnt make any difference.

The 32-bit version of the same release of Ubuntu Server with the default settings (even as low as 512mb ram) works perfectly fine on the same host.

FWIW running the install of the 32-bit release (ubuntu-12.04.2-server-i386.iso) gives the following log from boot:

Code: Select all

00:00:04.264916 Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from CD-ROM...

etc...
Not sure if this points to something wierd in the display driver when running the 64-bit guest on 32-bit host, given that it happens around these two lines:

00:00:04.301381 Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0, pvVRAM=06330000 w=640 h=480 bpp=16 cbLine=0x500, flags=0x1

thx
Steve

Please read Minimum information needed for assistance and also provide the guest config output.

Here are the guest settings.

00:00:01.337329 Host RAM: 2216MB total, 1055MB available
00:00:01.514561 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000040000000 (1 073 741 824, 1 024 MB)
00:00:01.514934 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000002000000 (33 554 432, 32 MB)
You are overcomiting your host's RAM, and this will cause the VM to crash. Either reduce the amount given to the VM or close programs in the host to free some RAM.
Bear in mind that there is an overhead with Virtualization so make sure you release with a nice maring.

Right - I've seen that occasionally the VM crashes with an out of memory error. But it's never affected the host before. Also, even if I set guest memory to 512mb, I get the same host reboot.

As a workaround, I've built the virtual machine on a spare 64-bit host (which worked fine). I'm still curious as to what is causing this issue though, since VirtualBox has otherwise been very solid.

thx
Steve

I would think that the fact that you can build this on a different host still using VirtualBox you have proved that VirtualBox is working properly. Maybe you just have a bad memory stick on the one that crashes. It could also be a corrupt package on the host. I would look at the hosts syslog, or other logs in the /var/log and see what is really happening.

The other box has a 64-bit host, so I'm not sure if it is a valid comparison.

If I have time I'll try to repeat under a different 32-bit host, which should indicate whether its a hardware/driver error, or something more general.

thx

Also keep in mind that running 64-bit guests on 32-bit hosts have a considerable amount of overhead. Over-committing in that scenario will happen faster.
