If the following command returns a symbolic link, then the Guest Additions should be able to find the linux headers:

ls -ld /lib/modules/*/build

The link is to the kernel source directory.

While I had followed that how-to, it does appear that on the latest install I neglected to install dkms... however, it still hasn't completly fixed the issue.

Code: Select all

Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.1.4 Guest Additions for Linux.........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 4.1.4 of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done.
Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done.
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules ...done.
Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.
You should restart your guest to make sure the new modules are actually used

Installing the Window System drivers
Installing X.Org Server 1.10 modules ...done.
Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions ...done.
You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart
the guest system) to enable the Guest Additions.

Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components ...done.
Press Return to close this window...
<reboot>

I'm waiting for my new CPU to arrive, then I can test this. Until then, I can only guess what needs to be done. Have some patience, when I have the new set up, I can run more VMs (currently lack disk space too).

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11
Not software rendered: no
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: no

This tells you what the problem is. You can also run glxinfo and see the information as well as looking at /var/log/xorg.0.log
For what ever reason your hardware is not handling the Raster. It may be due to your graphics adapter, or you may have corrupted the guest additions installation.

A question for you: I know that during the install you might be presented with a special driver from Ubuntu for the VirtualBox guest, did you install that?
Second question are you using the guest additions from Ubuntu or are you using the additions from your install of VirtualBox?

I didn't install anything special from Ubuntu.

I'm using the Guest Additions from VirtualBox

I can try doing another fresh install, it doesn't take too long.

Did you also use my guide for installation of the GA?

Not true.

If you look closely at this report and compare it to the other one it is saying that you have the right patches/programs installed now. Where it is now failing is the identification of your video card. This seems to be the issue with most that are using the ATI radeon. Now this might be your graphics drivers or it could be a VirtualBox issue. It might also be a Linux issue since I know for a fact that it has issues with the ATI drivers. I see you have posted a bug report and you need to keep it updated with what you have tried and what you are seeing.

Post the test report as well so they can see the issue. I would also post the exact model of you graphics adapter and the version and driver numbers.

Please also post the link here and keep it updated for others to see.

I'm not getting anywhere with this, I have the latest additions installed and everything up to date. The Mesa opengl software renderer is still being used, any hints on how I can change this? I can't see any error messages in the vb log file or the xorg file.

It's not my graphics card because if I rollback to a 11.04 snapshot the 3d acceleration works.

Ok, I tested it on my laptop instead. Host is Debian Sid, VB 4.1.4 build for Squeeze (that's the only Oracle build near the state of Sid). Hardware is a Dell Latitude E6510 with an nVidia Quadro video card. Driver is the nVidia driver in Sid. This is the result.
Clean install:

Code: Select all

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11

Not software rendered: no
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: no
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program: yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object: yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes

Unity 3D supported: no
After the GA were installed (and all updates before that):

Code: Select all

OpenGL vendor string: Humper
OpenGL renderer string: Chromium
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Chromium 1.9

Not software rendered: yes
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program: yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object: yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes

Unity 3D supported: yes
So, that shows that if you have a problem, it has to be on the Host. Perry and I both have nVidia cards, so I'm pretty confident to say that nVidia cards have no problems. Those with ATi cards may have to look for other solutions. Like how well your OpenGL support goes.

These are the graphics requirements for Unity.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DemystifyingUni ... quirements (be sure to read the entire topic)

Now there may be an issue with translation through VirtualBox with these cards, so instead of banging your head against the wall a lot more you may want to post a ticket at bugtracker .

I know they are fixing as much as fast as they can and if you provide enough information they may be able to fix this (if it is an issue with VirtualBox) or at least point you to a place where there is more information.

Hi,

I have a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit -> windows do not show up.
VirtualBox 4.1.4, with extension pack, host Mac OS X 10.7.2, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB.

I've upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 and installed 4.1.4 guest additions with "linux-headers-3.0.0-12-generic-pae".

Unity 3D definitely does not work with the 4.1.4 Guest Additions.

I made it work by following the advice in Ticket #9799

ie: I made the following symlink (inside a 64-bit guest - adjust for 32-bit):

Code: Select all

ls -al /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 44 2011-10-26 16:37 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so -> /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.1.4/lib/VBoxOGL.so

Re: unbuntu 11.10 guest editions do not work

I sorted it out on 64bit host, a closer look at the xorg.log did show up that the video driver wasn't being found and a similar soft link to above sorted it:

sudo ln -s /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.1.4/lib/VBoxOGL.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so

What is odd is that this doesn't seem to work as far as the xorg.log file reports:

[ 26.663] (II) AIGLX: Trying DRI driver /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so
[ 27.080] (II) Next line is added to allow vboxvideo_drv.so to appear as whitelisted driver
[ 27.080] (II) The file referenced, is *NOT* loaded
[ 27.080] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//ati_drv.so
[ 27.080] (II) AIGLX: vboxvideo does not export required DRI extension
...
[ 27.081] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

3d acceleration now works though so obviously the missing link did just enough.
