Send the shutdown signal does not work

Post by ToddAndMargo »

Hi All,

Host: CentoS 5.5
Guest: Fedora Core 14, 64 bit
vbox: 3.2.12

I am noticing the when I press the "X" in the upper corner of my guest's window, that the "Send the Shutdown" signal does not work. this is especially a pain the butt as I frequently loose my keyboard in the guest and the mouse wonk select the internal shutdown. This forces me to do the power off thing.

1) Is "Send the Shutdown" a Windows only function?

2) Is there a way to get "Send the Shutdown" to work?

Many thanks,
-T

Host+H = acpi shutdown. This should work in Fedora 14 as well.
Note: I just tried it on my Fedora 14 and it works as it should.
But if the keyboard is not working you will not be able to send the commands huh? If the keyboard still works in the host you can use VBoxManage to send the power down. If that fails then I would suggest finding out why the keyboard fails.

What is "Host+H"?

The loss of keyboard and mouse is the stupid thing mocking me.

The host key is the right ctrl key by default. Surly you have use that key. If you have any Windows guests it is all but impossible to send the ctrl, alt, delete without it.
Start the guest and click on the top tabs machine, device, help. There you can see what all of the host keys are and what they do.

Okay that key. I use it to get my mouse back before I get the guest additions installed. I have an arrow taped under it on the keyboard so I won't forget.

And, it does not work, either with the guest in focus or the host in focus. RATS!

I also tried clicking on "Machine", "ACPI shutdown" and that ignored me too. I also did the "Machine", "insert ctrl-alt-backspace" and that ignored me as well

Hmmm. Seems like all the "Machine" functions are dead. Any idea how to fix this?

Are you using 32 bit or 64 bit FC14?

run dmesg | grep acpi

you should see whether it is disabled or enabled via the messages.

ACPI can be enabled and loaded, but if there is no ACPI script hooked up to the key signal, nothing will happen. So check if the Guest has ACPI support scripts installed. If it's a server, it usually doesn't have them installed.
Ctrl+alt+backspace combination is disabled for a while now in Xorg and needs additional configuration to get it to be accepted again. Check the distro documentation.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that in the last 9 years there has not been a single thread dealing with this, and the only solution that you found was from 2010???

Locking this, should have done it a couple of months ago already...
