Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 X.Org driver for 1.9

Using 3.2.8 Guest Additions - error is "Warning: unsupported pre-release version of X.Org Server installed..."

My most recent update to Ubuntu 10.10 installed X.Org X server 1.8.99.905 (1.9.0 RC 5) On checking in VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run I see a test for X.Org version and 1.8.99 does not have a driver yet. Any idea when this will be available?

Still two month until Ubuntu 10.10 is released ... We hope that we can provide support for the new release either before the final release date or shortly after it.

Unless Ubuntu has released that version in the past few days, there should be no problem with the vboxvideo module on 10.10. I run Xubuntu 10.10 x64 on a W7 x64 host and the GA are installed just fine. Only thing is that I get an 800x600 screen after I log in, but that is easily corrected by changing the window dimensions so it updates.
So, even if there isn't official support, it does work for me. No idea about other features, you don't specify any.

I think that is the problem - this occurred after an update to Ubuntu. I was also getting 800x600 screen on login and fixed by changing window dimensions. Since update to X.Org 1.8.99 released as update by Ubuntu this no longer works, as the vboxvideo module no longer compiles (or even attempts to)

Understand this is pre-release, so will wait patiently for fixes to come through

The day after I typed that message, I updated my own 10.10 VM at work and got the xserver update with it. We just have to wait for the final version to be released so the devs can make a compatible module for it. I know they aren't all too happy to make a compatible version for a development release, because all the work can be for nothing if there is any change in the way it works when it goes final. If I were a programmer, I would hate it too.

I have the impression the vboxvideo module builds fine and can be loaded (sudo modprobe vboxvideo), however the driver installation fails.

Can the instalation be done manually somehow? (copy the right files to the right places)

There is no 'driver installation' on Linux. Everything works with modules. Sure, it builds, sure, you can modprobe it, but can Xorg load the module? No, it can't because it's not build to support the new version. It's like putting diesel in a gasoline car. You can put it in, but it won't start with it.

I bumped into this same issue with the -x86 version of the Guest Additions this morning, as I tried to set up an Ubuntu 10.10 guest. Without support for this latest version of X, it seems like we're pretty much stuck in terms of giving 10.10 a real spin until/unless an updated version of the Guest Additions is made available...

Just install this package, then reboot. Done.

First the GAs mentioned are a test release and you could have problems. If you want to install them you should do so in a TTY and not the terminal. If you get screen corruption you need to wait a bit and then do a blind terminal reboot.

Next if you are running the PUEL version you really should never install the OSE version of anything. It can corrupt files and is not supported.

by "driver installation" I was referring to the X side interface libraries. I thought the problem was a change in the default folder locations, but from what you are saying, it appears to be an API incompatibility.
