Chromium OS - "Network not connected and offline login fail"

Yeah so I built Chromium OS so I could try it out. It boots OK but I get the error "Network not connected and offline login fail" when I try to log in. Some people claim you can disconnect and reconnect the network to fix it (well in VMWare at least) but that didn't do anything for me.

I built the snapshot version linked from the chromium.org instructions.

Virtualbox 3.0.12 32-bit on Windows XP.

I tried the default network adapter as well as the Intel Desktop one, same result.

Anyone run into a similar problem and find a workaround?

I'll probably just torrent a pre-built, verified working build or something and see if that works better.

GDGT.com has a working build. There is a link posted to a video in Other Guests that shows to to install ChomeOS in VB.

I didn't want to download that one because you have to sign up on their site to access it, it seems.

Login as username: chronos / no password.

From there, it tried to resolve servers...no luck. Hit the refresh link in the tab, then it started resolving servers. Now it works.

I didn't generate an offline user for my build so that won't work.

Anyways I fixed it. Turns it the OS selection is important. I was using "Linux"/"Other", but you need "Linux"/"Debian" (other people have also used "Ubuntu" successfully). I got the idea when I remembered it uses Debian package management and the recommended build environment is Ubuntu so it's probably Debian based.

So yeah it logs in now. <3

[Edit: Err maybe not, it's stuck at a blue gradient screen with a mouse cursor but not much else. Oh well I'll just torrent^Wdownload the built VDMK and try that.]

[Edit: Ok this is weird, when I try the original built VMDK instead of my converted VDI I can't get it to find the network like the VDI can. WTF? Oh well the VMDK that other people have gotten working is almost done downloading.]

[Edit: That VMDK has the same problem as my VDI. Stuck at a blue screen with a mouse cursor.]

I can confirm that using Linux/Debian as OS type in VirtualBox will solve the issue. Using PCnet-PCI II (Bridged adpter, Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller)

Maybe not -- seems to only periodically connect after I login as chronos...

Gonna bite the bullet and sign up for GDGT and try their build. The torrented one I tried isn't the same (no chronos user).

Try Bridged adapter instead of NAT if you have connection problems? I can't tell if that'll work, I can't get that far. :P

Same problem with this image: "chromeos-image-999.999.32309.211410-a1.vmdk.bz2"
I've tested with almost all linux types, but none of them seems to work. Can't pass login screen.
I'm running VBox 3.0.12 on Snow Leopard.

GDGT build doesn't work either, same blue screen after login problem. It ALSO has the same "Network" error but you can bypass THAT by using the "chronos" offline user.

[Edit: Tried that build and I got the same problem. Not that it matters since whenever I get past the log in screen on other builds nothing happens.]

[Edit: Tried all 5 builds I could find (one I built myself)... none work with VirtualBox, apparently.]

I've found just wait and twiddle your thumbs for ten seconds. Then it logs in just fine... :)

Registered with GDGT, Downloaded the file from them, added to my VirtualBox environment (Ubuntu904/VB3.0.10) per the simple instructions (used Linux Other Linux).... works.
Logged into initial screen using chronos and no password, but then it brought me to my Gmail login page...
Not sure if I trust GD not to harvest my Gmail password yet...changed GMAil PW for the login, then flipped the PW back.

Not sure I get it yet...appears to be nothing more than a souped up browser?

Two things. First of all, VirtualBox definitely supports ChromiumOS's networking. The failure to login is actually Google's PAM service failing to connect or authenticate. (Not sure which). If you watch the network traffic, the VM is actually sending traffic just fine. So, everyone who had failures, just try again. :)

If all you want to do is test it out and see what it looks like, as others mentioned, log in via chronos, with no password. This is the default shared user account, and will let you at least poke around. This always works, regardless of PAM authentication.

In response to Mooneypilot: Yea, it's pretty much a souped up browser; with a minimal OS, so a user is almost instantaneously dropped into the browser. There is some behind the scenes magic that handles some cool security stuff, but other than that... :) Also, if you didn't login with the chronos account, and instead used your Google account info, you wouldn't have to login to Gmail after that, you would be automatically logged in. (PS: I realize that you don't want to do that, I'm just telling you so you can save the step and keep your password close to your heart and fingers.)

If you want people to test your build, it would be useful if you also give a password for root, if one is set, in case they need it.

How do I login offline? I am getting the Network error, but I think the proxy is causing it.
