Enabling graphics acceleration in Ubuntu guest

Post by Huss »

Hi All,

I am working on enabling graphics acceleration in a Ubuntu 9.4 guest.
I have installed 'guest additions' and checked the 3D acceleration box. When I enable visual effects in Ubuntu an error is returned: "Desktop effects could not be enabled".
The virtualbox log reads:

Code: Select all

00:06:28.281 OpenGL Warning: Render SPU: WGL wants these visual capabilities: RGB, Doublebuffer, Z
00:06:28.284 OpenGL Warning: Render SPU: WGL chose these visual capabilities: RGBA, Doublebuffer, Z, Stencil, Accum
00:06:28.300 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VENDOR: Intel
00:06:28.300 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_RENDERER: Intel 965/963 Graphics Media Accelerator
    00:06:28.300 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VERSION: 1.5.0 - Build 6.14.10.4796
00:06:28.410 OpenGL Warning: Render SPU: WGL wants these visual capabilities: RGB, Doublebuffer, Z
00:06:28.413 OpenGL Error: SetPixelFormat failed (Error 0xc007001f)
00:06:28.413 OpenGL Warning: Render SPU: WGL chose these visual capabilities: RGB, Doublebuffer, Z
00:06:28.415 OpenGL Error: Render SPU: (MakeCurrent) failed to make 0x190105cf, 0x10001 current with 0x6 error.

Further troubleshooting advice or workarounds would be appreciated.

Regards

Huss

P.S. My graphics card is an 'Intel 965 Express chipset family'. Running Virtualbox 2.2

Huss,

Things are not going to change by entering this in a different category. You should upgrade to ver 2.2.4
Read all of the posts to this topic, it will explain what you need to look for: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 2&start=30

Good evening Huss,

It appears that you are having a problem with your graphics card and OpenGL with VirtualBox. I would suggest that you post a bug report with the Dev's so they can see what the problem might be. The link to Bugtracker is at the bottom of my post. You will need to sign up there as well (sorry) because they are on a completely different system. Be sure to give them as much information as you can and DO NOT forget to send the complete log. They are strict about this.

Intel cards do NOT have OpenGL support. Sorry, but everything is rendered in software mode, not hardware. VB uses hardware acceleration, which your card doesn't support. Go complain at Intel for that. Your bug report will be marked as invalid the moment they see your graphics card. Get a better one, if possible.

Hmm, I thought it does have open GL support

The specs on this (http://support.intel.com/products/chips ... /index.htm) site say:
texture Decompression for DirectX* and OpenGL*
OpenGL* 1.4 support plus ARB_vertex_buffer and EXT_shadow_funcs extensions and TexEnv shader caching

They do but *only* 1.4 opengl and *no* non power of 2 textures, so compiz wouldn't work. Some other apps might but not compiz unless the code is changed there.

"They do but *only* 1.4 opengl"

That's not true. If you read http://downloadmirror.intel.com/17407/e ... st_gfx.htm you will see that OpenGL till 2.0 is supported by my 965 Intel graphic card. To confirme this I did also run a successful test with OpenGL Extensions Viewer.

*no* non power of 2

If you can trust the database of OpenGL Extensions Viewer "no power of two" is also supported.

http://www.kludx.com/card.php?card=5 confirms this, too.

Thanks for the reply Technowizard.

Any theories on the error/solution?

Don't know where is your problem but I can confirm that Compiz works fine on a 2006 MacBook with Intel GMA 950 Graphics, both in native boot mode and virtualized with Virtualbox 2.2.4 (had no problems installing the guest additions). Host OS: Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard. Guest OS: Ubuntu 8.04 & 9.04. Please note: not working with Compiz on KDE or simply KDE similar effect, therefore not working in Kubuntu 8.04 & 9.04. GMA 965, AFAIK, is better than 950.

I can understand him cause I have the same problems with the Lenovo notebook (Intel 965) I work with. If I enable compositing all effects are disabled. But I have not found a workaround or even the source of the problem.

A quick update:
I installed the latest intel 965 driver. I can now enable desktop effects BUT it freezes up my Virtual Ubuntu.
