Hi.
A number of times now I have tried installing openSUSE 11.1 as a guest in a virtual machine using VirtualBox. The host is also openSUSE 11.1. Most of the times it fails, the install won't even boot. Sometimes it works only to freeze half way through the installation. I have one installation that went all the way through but this machine fails to boot 9 times out of 10. This seems to be the cause also when installing; openSUSE will not boot correctly, sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't. The problem with booting openSUSE 11.1 seems to be also present on Windows hosts, my colleagues using Windows hosts have the same problem. Installing and booting openSUSE 10.X does not suffer from this problem. Does anyone else have the same problem? Is there a solution?

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
I am running VBox 2.2.0 on a Windows XP SP2 host. I am experiencing basically the same issue when trying to run openSUSE 11.1 in VBox. I am running Linux Mint 6 Felicia without any issues through VBox, but cannot get openSUSE to work at all.
I am able to successfully install SUSE, but when I restart the VM, it boots to GRUB, then goes to a black screen and hangs there. I've left it open for ten or fifteen minutes at a time to see if anything would happen; yet nothing does.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Following is the log from my VBox/openSUSE installation:

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
I have seen this issue with openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 but not Gnome.
What I did to get it to install was increase the amount of RAM to 1024, turn on IO APIC and it installed fine.

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
I am having exactly the same problem - OpenSuse 11.1 guest (32bit) installer would not boot in Windows XP (32bit) host . I get Welcome, then boot menu, where I select Install, "Loading kernel" goes to 100%, then I get warning about 16it color in guest and black window. I have this problem on two machines. Trying installation in text mode ends with "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt"
Host - 2GB of RAM, P2 2.1GHz, guest - from 512MB to 1256MB, PIIX3/PIIX4, PAE/NX, ACPI, IO APIC on and off in different combinations, almost all NIC models in NAT/bridge, no network at all, enable VT is checked and greyed out.
Fedora 11 boots into installer just fine.
Obviously there are people who got Suse 11.1 installed as guest. Could they share the recepie for success?

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
@kpalagin,
All you should need to do is set it up with the defaults that VBox sets up for you and leave everything alone except the CD/DVD, where you select the install media.
I install with 1024 meg to help the install go faster but the actual program I have set to 256 meg and it works fine.
After it is up and running you can tweak some numbers if you need to. I do know that KDE4 does cause problems and that is why I use Gnome.

I forgot to tell that I could not get installer to launch even with default VM.

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
Have you considered that you may have a faulty copy of OpenSUSE11.1?
I know for a fact that it works in VBox on Windows.

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
I have got installer to boot on AMD dual-core using the same .iso.
Could this be a timing bug in VB, which manifests itself only on Pentium4 ~2GHz?

Using
noreplace-paravirt
boot option for kernel did the trick. Apparently some changes are made to the kernel - http://lwn.net/Articles/233315/

Re: Problems booting openSUSE 11.1 in VirtualBox
This is the trick which finally worked for me in order to get an OpenSuse 11.1 guest installed using VirtualBox 3.0.6 with a Windows 7 RC system serving as host. Even then the boot up to the live CD installer screen was very slow.kpalagin wrote:Using
