Some advanced networking setup problem
Dear Sirs,
Here are my questions and need your help.
Environment:
1. Host OS: WinXP + SP3 (Wired-Marvell / Wireless-Intel) => Only wireless is working.
2. Guest OS: Ubuntu 8.10 (Already installed the guest additions, and use "Host Interface")
3. Virtualbox version: 2.1.4
Questions:
1. Cannot use "Pure" wireless network in my Guest OS. No matter what adapter type, I could only find "Wired" network in my Guest OS.
Even my Host OS is connecting the Internet by WLAN, my Guest OS still has wired network. No wireless adapter found by iwconfig.
2. Cannot setup different networking between Host OS and Guest OS. That means I want to use wired network in the Host OS, and wireless network in the
Guest OS.
3. If Host OS had no network (No wired cable / Wireless shutdown), how could Guest OS communicate with Host OS?
Thx & B.R

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
There isn't a wireless virtual NIC for the Guests, you can only select what VBox offers and even that is virtual.

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
Vbox should provide you with a connection using what ever your host is using. The reason it does not look the same is because VBox is using a virtual network. So if you are connected with the wireless on the host that is what you will be using on the guest but it will still appear to be a wired connection, and the reverse if you are using wired.

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
1. That's in the VirtualBox FAQ.
2. Only possible if you have connection with both. You can't dedicate the wireless for your Guest without an active connection to the Access Point. An IP isn't needed, just the connection.
3. That's why they added Host-Only in 2.2. Else use a virtual adapter, see the VirtualBox FAQ too about Old Style HIF.

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
Dear Sirs,
Many thanks for your reply.
Because I ever used VMware, and it could more reality as a real PC.
My purpose is to build a dummy server on the Guest OS, and could do any test based on the Guest OS, including test wireless connecting, and BT profiles test.
For the third question, I will try verion 2.2 then. I could not download yesterday, the URL seems broken or missed.
Thx & B.R

If you happen to have a wireless USB dongle, then you can add that to the VM to give it it's own wireless NIC.

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
Dear Sirs,
I met another problem after updated to v2.2.
Before use v2.1.4, it could find all my wired / wireless adapter, and choose at "Host Interface".
But after I updated to v2.2, all adapters are disappeared, and only could use "Host only" interface.
Any one know what happened?
Thx & B.R

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
Dear Sirs,
I tried to repair by v2.14 or v2.2, and no work.
Here are some abnormal conditons I met:
1. Cannot install with error display "permanently".
2. Cannot remove due to critical error.
3. Cannot create virtual disk.
4. Cannot find physical network adapter.
My steps:
1. Since I cannot install v2.2, so I install v2.1.4
2. After installed v2.1.4, then install v2.2
3. Could install successfully, but cannot find any network adapters.
I ever installed IE8 and now removed it. Also use WinXP + SP3 now.
Thx & B.R

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
You should try to re-install using the VBox installer and this time do it from the Administrator account in Windows. Seems like a lot of people are having issues with this when trying to install as a normal user, but have been succesful when trying as the Administrator.
In XPpro you can do this by right clicking on the EXE and select run as....... In Vista you do the same but only need to click on run as administrator

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
Dear Sir,
Currently my Virtualbox could work now, and I list out my trial steps.
But I still met two questions, also remind too.
1. Issue1: When launch a virtual OS and booting, at the same time I was using IE to browse a web site. Sometimes if switch several times, the virtual OS window could focus, but will overlap by IE web page. That means, even I wait for a long time, I cannot use my Virtual OS.
2. Issue2: When setup the shared folder, the virtualbox will be terminated with an error. So I always setup it after installed the Guest OS additions.
My trial steps:
0. Remove IE8
1. Re-install with v2.1.4, then install v2.2.
2. Repair with v2.2.
Thx & B.R

Re: Some advanced networking setup problem
1. Probably an issue on the Host itself, if you switch applications too fast.
2. Known issue, the GUI crashes when the file browser is opened. Enter the path for the shared folder manually, or copy/paste it from Explorer.
