Idle Ubuntu Feisty Fawn guest causing host load

Post by guardian_de »

Hi,

I'm running VB 1.5.0 on an Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty host. The guest system is a Ubuntu 7.04 too. My computer is a Mac Mini Intel Core Duo.

Though the guest is idling it consumes like 30%-40% of one of my cpu cores constantly. Even shutting down the X server and disabling practically all system service doesn't help. VB additions (1.5.0 version) are installed. The guest is running the default Ubuntu 2.6.20 kernel.

Any helpers?

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 7.04, running Windows XP Home SP2 as guest. The VirtualBox process is consuming around 30% CPU while the guest is supposed to be idle. At least I see no actions on either disk or lan.

My host system is an up2date Ubuntu 7.04 with the distribution's default kernel

$ uname -a
Linux schleppi 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Fri Aug 31 00:55:27 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I have the same problem, continuous 40% CPU load when the guest is idle.
Running Ubuntu 7.04 guest on OpenSuse 10.2 host.

I've been struggling with this issue as well. Similar configuration, except that I have Fedora 7 as host, WinXP SP2 Pro as guest. Guest shows close to 0% CPU%, but host shows VirtualBox process at ~30%. I tried passing the "nohz=off" kernel option, unfortunately to no avail. Anyone else experiencing this?

$ uname -a
Linux belle 2.6.22.5-76.fc7 #1 SMP Thu Aug 30 13:47:21 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
$ rpm -q VirtualBox

My CPU is a Pentium M 2 GHz on a Dell 700m laptop. Judging from the posts in this thread, the 10-30% CPU load at idle seems to affect Windows as well as Linux guest users, at least on Linux hosts.
