Debian 11 freezes when Windows 11 host comes out of sleep mode

Post by GRG »

Hi,

I'm running Debian 11 on Windows 11 host. After waking up Windows 11 host, I can login to Debian 11 but after login I can't click anywhere or type anything. I can see all the program windows in Debian 11 but they don't respond to mouse click or keypress event. It looks like I'm clicking on a invisible glass window in Debian.

Appreciate your help.

Below is the tail of virtual box log-

Bits of logs sprayed over the forums are not useful. We need the whole thing, as an attachment.

Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Thanks for your response. I have attached the Virtual Box log as you said.

There are several things I don't like about the configuration of this VM.
  1. You have allocated 6 cores, which is 100% of available cores, to guest code, leaving none for VirtualBox or the host OS. It should be obvious that this is not a good idea. Most VMs run best with 2 cores. At most you should give it 4 cores IF you have a process running in the VM that needs multiple cores.
  2. You have only allocated 80MB graphics RAM, why so stingy? I would max this out at 128MB.
  3. You are running in a full HD graphics mode without enabling hardware assistance (a.k.a. 3D acceleration). Again this is not usually a good idea.
  4. You have allocated ~20GB of RAM to the VM (the host has 25GB available), does it really need this much? An excessive RAM allocation can especially cause problems if you have a habit of hibernating your PC, as all that RAM needs to be saved to and restored from disk. Even on an NVMe SSD with an I/O rate of 3GB/s, that is still several seconds.
There are also warnings in the log having to do with the VM being very laggy, failing to respond for extended periods. A fairer allocation of CPU resources might help with that.

I don't immediately see anything that should result in a hang, but note that Windows 11 is still not yet an officially supported host OS.

Thank you for the response.
1. I have allocated 6 virtual cores out of 12 virtual cores to the VM, which mean I have allocated 50% of processing power to the VM. My machines has 6 physical cores and 12 virtual cores and virtual box only let me allocate virtual cores to VM. To be honest processing wise this combination is working well given I do some processor heavy dev work on virtual machine.
2. I'll allocate 128MB graphics RAM.
3. I'll enable 3D acceleration.
4. My host has 32 GB memory and I have allocated 20 GB to VM, leaving out 12 GB for the host.

Ah I was not aware that Windows 11 still not supported. I did not face problem in my initial setup of Windows 10 Pro Host and Debian 10. In my current setup of Windows 11 Pro + Debian 11, I'm trying to understand if Windows 11 Pro or Debian 11 is causing the freezing issue. I'll report back if above changes help or I found something interested in Debian log.

Let me give you a third opinion on that (partially backed by Intel ;)):

From my POV, it can (*) be ok to provide 6 vCPUs to the VM, if the host CPU only runs the VirtualBox hypervisor and the VM (and a bit of host OS housekeeping). But your math is wrong: According to Intel - What Is Hyper-Threading?, "Hyper-Threading improves the CPU throughput by up to 30% in server applications". This means that you provide ~75% to the VM and leave ~25% for the VirtualBox hypervisor and the host OS.

(*) An additional role plays the workload of the VM. If it is CPU bound, it will probably be ok, but if it is I/O bound, it could be different. When in doubt, I'd suggest to measure real world workloads with a clock.

Core means physical silicon, so "virtual core" is a contradiction in terms.

Only the cores matter, not the threads. FAQ: Cores vs Threads.

It doesn't matter how much RAM you have installed. What matters is how much is currently available, this info can be found in the log near the top.
