Boot problems after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04

Post by TimOfMarple »

I have been running Ubuntu 20 in VirtualBox 5.2.22 (on Windows11) happily for some time.
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04 and the system then failed to boot properly - it ends up with the login screen but without showing any options - it freezes.
Fortunately I can boot it into safe mode, and get the basic (low resolution) GUI running.
I'm not clear about what the differences are between normal boot and safe mode.
I looked at the log file, but didn't see anything obvious, but I'm not sure what to look for.
Is this a problem others have found (I've not been able to track down anything) and how should I go about fixing it?

Ubuntu is known to go blackscreen if there is not enough free disk space to start the desktop environment. This happens in real PCs too. The solution is to log on text-only and delete stuff until the desktop environment can start. Web-search how to fix this in an Ubuntu PC and apply the steps to the VM. Also see How to Resize a Drive

Thanks for the suggestion, but in this case I still have 71Gb free, so I don't think that's the problem.

Inside the VM? If so, how do you know? If not, the free space needs to be in the VM for the VM's OS to use it.

This means that Virtualbox is working and the problem lies inside the VM OS somewhere. It may not be the filled-up disk cause, but the OS has a glitch somewhere. I'd ask on an Ubuntu forum, ignoring the Virtualbox side of the issue for the moment.

I have exactly the same problem.
Login/boot via xorg works, but via wayland the desktop crashes and falls back to login.

This is not a problem with the disk size.

Does anyone have any ideas besides reinstalling?

Yep. Problems with Wayland are well known. Try switching to X.

Is there no solution to the problem except to use x?

I would have said so if there was. At the moment Wayland has known compatibility issues with VirtualBox.

And btw, I did not say it was a solution: I suggested a test.

I had written that it works with xorg.
But I would like to know if there is already a possibility for Wayland.
