Rocky Linux Aborted on OSX 12.5 Host

Post by LammaJamma »

I have a OSX 12.5 host and a Rocky Linux 8 guest and it seemingly randomly aborts anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes every time I use it. I've tried installing or not installing guest additions as well as a variety of machine settings and it it doesn't seem to make any difference. My machine settings currently are:

Base Memory: 8192 MB
Chipset: ICH9
Pointing Device: PS/2 Mouse
Extended Features: (all checked)
Video Memory: 32 MB
Monitor Count: 1
Graphics Controller: VMSVGA
Acceleration: Not checked
Audio is not enable
NAT Networking

Let's undo this with a new VM please.

Rocky Linux is supposed to be compatible with Red Hat. So please make an appropriate Red Hat VM, making no changes to any settings except:
2 processors
2 GB RAM

Install Rocky Linux 8 in the VM. Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until the VM aborts.

Then right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

If the new Rock VM aborts, also please make a VM to run Ubuntu or Mint, no changes except 2 processors, 2 GB RAM. Try that VM and see if it aborts.

Created the VM with 2 GB of RAM, 2 processors, and with the small change of disabling audio. After installing, rebooting, and making it to the login screen, the machine aborted when I released the mouse with the left command key. Zipped log attached.

That looks like an Oracle Linux VM, not Red Hat.

LammaJamma, Call the VM Red Hat, and it'll come up Red Hat. Install Rocky in it.

Do you see the discrepancy in these, LammaJamma? If you come to us asking for help, you should do what we ask you to do.

My apologies. I will start over and follow instructs as closely as possible. Rocky Linux requires a minimum of 9.42 GB of disk space, the default size of a VDI is 8GB, when creating the VM I elected to create a 30 GB VDI. The VM is named "Red Hat", it has 2 processors, 2 GB ram, and as noted a 30 GB hard disk.

The installation of Rocky Linux uses defaults except for:
  • Added fips=1 option to the kernel command line during the system installation to enable fips compliant mode
    Networking was enabled
The NIST 800-171 security profile was applied
After logging in and waiting for awhile the VM abort the same as before. Log is attached.

Thanks! It's been a few hours and I haven't had the machine abort.
