Run Synology's VM on VirtualBox

Post by BobCrandell »

Hi,
So it occurred to me that I could export Synology's DSM VM as a OVA. I would like to import it into VirtualBox. I did but it won't boot. I'm guessing the VM is looking for the Synology NAS.

Has anyone gotten this working?
Thanks
Bob

I wasn't aware that Synology made their DSM available in VM form.

Is this what you are referring to?

No. I have played with ZPENology and it is pretty good.
But this is what I was talking about:

Once the VM is created then export to OVA then import that OVA into VirtualBox.
Getting this to boot is where I'm stuck.

Well first things first: what model Synology NAS do you have? I.e. is it based on an x86 CPU?

The NAS is DS1817+ which uses INTEL Atom C2538
I haven't had a chance to upgrade it yet so it is still running DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 2

Thanks

Intel CPU, check.

Did you get any warning from VirtualBox when you imported the VM? E.g. regarding unknown or unsupported hardware?

Did you make any manual changes to the VM (did you enable or disable EFI, or did you change disk controller).

Do you get any error messages during boot? How far does it get?

I have a Synology DS918+, but I'm reluctant to add packages or use up VM licenses to try this.

There were no warnings.
I have it set to 4 GB RAM.
I enabled and disabled IO APIC - no change.
I did not enable EFI
I enabled and disabled Hardware Clock is in UTC time - no change.
I have it set to 3 CPUs.
I Enabled and disabled PAE/NX - no change.
I did not Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V
I enabled High Precision Event timer.
Paravirtualization Interface is Default.
I enabled and disabled Nested Paging - no change.
I enabled and disabled VPID - no change.
I did not change the display from what was imported.
Storage is SCSI which is what was imported.
There are 3 60 GB VDI drives.
There is no Audio.
For network AMD PCnet-FAST III was imported. I changed it to Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop and the other Intel NICs - No change.
I enabled the serial port.
USB is set to USB 2.0

There are no error messages.

It gets down to "Booting the kernel."
Nothing shows up in my DHCP Leases.

Each NAS is allowed 1 free Virtual Machine Manager which can handle as many VMs as the hardware can support and 1 Virtual DSM. One NAS I manage runs 3 fairly busy VMs. No extra licenses required.

Having a Virtual DSM is pretty handy but except for testing I don't see much point to it. Now if you could take that VM to another location and setup a "cloud" backup from the main one that would be cool.
Anyway that is my goal.
Thanks
