Apologies for my lack of knowledge, I'm self learning as fast as I can.
I use a VPN on my windows host machine. Is there any advantage to also running one on my linux guest machine in virtual box or would this be redundant?

Re: VPN on Host windows machine, linux guest
Depends partially on the Virtualbox network type for the VM. If it's NAT or NAT Network, the VM's traffic goes through the host OS's network stack and very likely thus through the host VPN. If the VM is Bridged, then the VM's traffic goes outside the host OS's network stack and might be able to do an end run around the host VPN, thus getting its own LAN/internet connection, and requiring a separate VPN if having one is needed.
Whether these possibilities happen is all dependent on how strongly the host VPN rules the host network, and that's not predictable from a Virtualbox standpoint. Just have to try it and see.
