Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
Ever since I attached a Dell 27" monitor to my Dell laptop, my VirtualBox's Ubuntu 20.04 is booting with a blank black screen. There is no Ubuntu desktop. And after a while, I get this :
I restarted several times, same issue.

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
Your question does not concern "Windows Hosts". Topic moved to "Linux Guests".
ISTR that "black screen on Ubuntu" has been reported a lot recently, so you might try searching the "Linux Guests" forum. Sorry, I'm not much of a Linux user myself, and I don't use Ubuntu at all.
A zipped VM log wouldn't hurt either.

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
So this doesn't have anything to do with my external monitor ? I didn't check my VirtualBox before I got my external monitor in a long time.
(I am using VirtualBox 6.1)

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
First, if you remove the monitor from your laptop and reboot it, does the VM run correctly?
Second, please start the failing VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.
Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log and the hardening log next to it, zip them, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

No - same issue.First, if you remove the monitor from your laptop and reboot it, does the VM run correctly?
Log attached.
PS: But when Ubuntu starts, Microsoft Teams startup program does start but is inactive.

So it's the Ubuntu desktop that's black.

Pictures should be cropped and resized to get under the forum's 128kB size limit, then be posted using the forum's Upload Attachment tab, like was done above.
Thanks for the log! It shows that the Windows host's Hyper-V is enabled. I don't see in this run if Hyper-V used to be enabled when the VM was working. Hyper-V sometimes causes trouble for Virtualbox.
Aside from Hyper-V being on, I don't see anything odd in the running of the VM. Interesting that you report MS Teams starting, meaning that the VM's OS is running. Also, Guest Additions reports activity, which confirms that the VM OS is running.
Before trying to disable Hyper-V, please web-search how to log into Ubuntu and check the available disk space in the VM's disk. If it is full then Ubuntu going black-screen is a known Ubuntu problem when Ubuntu's disk fills up. It happens on physical PC's running Ubuntu too. You'd need to free up some amount of free space on the VM's disk, then the Ubuntu desktop will start.
If you clear off enough space and the desktop still does not start, try disabling Hyper-V. HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
The vdi is 62.2GB while I set it to 100GB when setting it up.Before trying to disable Hyper-V, please web-search how to log into Ubuntu and check the available disk space in the VM's disk.
I downloaded Ubuntu 21.04 and installed it and it's running in the VirtualBox. So this is specific to 20.04 ?
But I spent time setting up my Ubuntu 20.04 for my projects which I need to redo for the new 21.04 setup - something that I would like to avoid.

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
Theoretically this means you'd have some 37-ish GB to go. But how are the partitions inside set up? Thus you need to log in text-only and check the available space, per a web-search in how to fix Ubuntu going blackscreen when the disk runs out of space.anjanesh wrote:The vdi is 62.2GB while I set it to 100GB when setting it up.

CTRL+F1 doesn't open the terminal. No effect. Thus you need to log in text-only

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
I tried to boot as text (terminal) and failed. Now VirtualBox doesn't even boot it.

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
No, I an not sure if I should disabled Hyper-V as this is a work laptop.
I re-installed Ubuntu 20.04_3 and resetup my environment and projects.

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
I am not sure if disabling Hyper-V will solve the problem. But Hyper-V does interfere with Virtualbox in many ways. If you can convince your boss that Virtualbox is good for your work, the boss might order your workplace IT department to turn Hyper-V off.

Re: Blank Black Ubuntu Screen after attaching external monitor
Today, my colleague informed me that his VirtualBox's Ubuntu 18.04 crashed too and not-recoverable. (He used 18.04 because he set this up before 2020). So he has to re-setup the OS with the project files in the shared folder.
The setup is for Django 2.2, redis, MySQL 5.7 and some python related libraries like pandas etc. So not sure which component is responsible for this crash.
