Guru Meditation 1155 Triple Fault Linux Guest Windows 10 Host

Post by Oracleiscool »

Hi Everyone,
Got something weird here. I will not even try to guess. fTPM (AMD) and Secure Boot is active for host.
I did not use any tools to try and integrate linux (either OS) with secure boot, and made sure all the Windows HyperV and Virtualization stuff is off, but did turn on Virtualization at the Bios level (HP Bios posted warnings about that).
The drive is a real mechanical (not ssd, etc.) system, and the efi shim bootloader on both linux OS drove the install into the efi/gpt file system.
The OS's work fine (even updates), but they both fail on reboot, and if you turn off the systems via VirtualBox, and Start them again, they are booting with their updates.
I have all the feature sets (standard and experimental) turned on in VirtualBox Settings, and only had a little trouble with controller sensing on both disk controllers.
I think that my HP disk controller is so wide open, it can see any drive and adapt, even when the fastest translators are in SATA/AHCI pool.
Thanks for the help.

You can narrow the search by disabling (in turn, not at the same time) 3D graphics acceleration, and then audio. If that stops the crash then it indicates a bad host driver. This might also be evident in the hardening log.

I'm also not happy with how much RAM you are giving this VM. Your 64bit host only has 8GB total, so it struggles to afford 4GB. I would reduce to 3GB.

Guess what?
The machines were overwhelmed with memory. Turned down to 3GB on both, and now all is well. Left all the features enabled, and it all works, even mx_21 (still in beta for work in the efi shim stack). I posted about this in the Ubuntu main bug thread, so will follow-up there as well.Thank you times two! I sent along the logs for hardening and regular boot follows. If you see anything I can send back to the MX folks for feedback, I'll send it if you want. Cheers!
