Linux Guests Huge Sound Lag

I'm running Vista. Sound works fine; I never get any stuttering or delay in windows software. in Virtualbox I get major audio delay though. I've installed ubuntu 9.04 and suse 11 as guests. In many linux software I get a 1/2 second to 1 full second delay in sounds. This is especially noticeable in frozen-bubble and flash-player in firefox. Has anyone experienced this and know a fix? Perhaps linux driver not support Intel AC97 very well. Linux works fine with my native hardware though.

I've got core 2 processor w 3 gigs ram.
Intel integrated video and sound (the computer is latitude e6400)

I've tried setting virtualbox to sb16 too, but I haven't been able to get sound working at all this way. I don't think its 100% sb compatible.

I haven't tried windows guests, maybe I should try that next and get back to you.

Final bump. Now I have installed windows inside of virtualbox to see if the sound lags in any apps there. It doesn't. It seems that it only affects linux guests. I even tested a ubuntu guest on another computer (winxp, completely different hardware), and found that there was a bit of a sound delay there too. But it was barely noticeable there, so something about the first computer makes the delay even worse . Oddly enough the computer giving huge delay is much faster.

So I'm guessing it must be a universal bug for any linux guests that run on windows hosts, but many people don't notice it, because the severity can differ greatly from machine to machine. Has anyone else noticed this or am I alone? I'm trying to figure out if I should file a bug report, since no one seems to know how to fix this, yet.

I have found that running Mandriva 2010.0 as guest on VBox with Vista as host gives no audio problems at all.
However when I run PCLinux I get badly stuttering sound to the point it is unrecognisable.
Could it be the Linux Kernel that is causing an incompatibility with VBox???

Actually, I must correct the last post.
When I run the latest PCLinux, including MiniMe, I get massive audio stuttering problems.
However, when I run PCLinux 2009.1, last years distro, there is absolutely no audio problems. Go figure???
Somehow the Kernal is figuring in all this.
