Virtualbox 7 guest additions installation
In version 7 there's a new way to install the GAs from the Devices|Upgrade guest additions... menu. Just as a matter of interest, how does this work? Witchcraft? Does it not need to know the root password to do this?

Re: Virtualbox 7 guest additions installation
GA update leverages already existing GA functionality in the guest. When VirtualBox cannot detect running guest additions in the guest Update menu item is disabled. It does not require root password.

Attempting this way led to disaster for me. A panel popped up to the side and a progress bar went to 77% and stayed for hours. Clicking the cancel x did nothing. When I powered off the machine, it wouldn't boot subsequently. I had to reload from a backup.
I wouldn't use this method.

Re: Virtualbox 7 guest additions installation
This function is new for Virtualbox 7.0, which still has bugs to find. 7.0's Guest Additions are also in bug-fix stage. Any running of VM's under 7.0 should be considered experimental for now, and backups of important VMs are super important.
Big +1 for having the backup!Organic_Marble wrote:I had to reload from a backup.

Tried it again since a couple updates have been pushed out. It works now on my systems. The progress bar jumps instantly to 77% and then hangs there for a few minutes, but then it completes successfully.

Glad it's working for you now!
Re: Virtualbox 7 guest additions installation
Tried this on my mx linux 21-3 as guest on a Windows 11 machine, hangs at 77%, then gives a fail message, and my shared folder i use stopped working. Just went back to a previous state, but still at guest additions 6.1.8 where i have constantly mouse button issues.
