Kernel Panic - Centos 9 Stream

Post by supmethods »

I'm trying to install CentOS 9 Stream on a virtual machine on my computer, but I'm getting a "kernel panic not syncing fatal exception" error when it starts. I have downloaded the ISO twice to check to see if it's corrupted but I still have the same problem. I have numerous VMs installed that are working fine including Centos 8 and Debian 11.

I'm using VirtualBox 6.1.34. Host: Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1, Build 19043.1706, 64Bit. i7-10700KF, 64GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, PRIME Z490M-PLUS Motherboard

Please provide a VM log file. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

The settings of this VM do not seem adequate for running a 64bit desktop OS.

I would increase increase vCPU cores to 2. Increase VM RAM to 8192MB or 16384MB. Increase graphics RAM to 128MB.

Hyper-V is enabled, but that might or might not be an issue. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

This might be a red herring, but there's a possible Windows Update that is anecdotally causing kernel panics in Linux VMs on Windows 11 hosts with a couple users viewtopic.php?f=6&t=106043. Did you install Windows Updates just before you tried the VM?

Increasing resources does not fix the problem. Disabling Hyper-V does not fix the problem.

I do have the latest update for Windows 10. All other Linux VMs (ClearOS, CentOS 8 Stream, Debian 11) are working except CentOS 9 Stream. The article is for Windows 11.

If there is a new scenario to discuss then we need a new zipped log.

I'm not sure which article this refers to, but no aspect of this discussion has concerned Windows 11. The information about Hyper-v applies to all Windows versions since Windows 8.1.

Hyper-v is still enabled

Interesting. Maybe Hyper-V on the host isn't important. But then again it may be. Try turning it off.

Are there other CentOS 9 channels besides Stream to try?

Something in the Linux kernel that C9 stream is using has changed. Centos releases a new VM image of C9 stream roughly every couple of weeks. I went back to January and tried an image and it worked. The images for the last couple of months have not worked and I have not changed anything on my system, just downloaded an older version of the image. Also, I got the older image to work, then did a 'dnf update' to update to the latest kernel (among other things). On reboot, I got the same kernel panic error. So, it is something in the kernel which has changed since January. I haven't tried all the releases since January to see where it breaks, as I do not have a lot of time, but it would be nice to know exactly which release it started to break on.

Yes, the reason for the kernel panic was due to Hyper-V being enabled. It has been disabled and now working fine. Thank you.
