Impossible to use VirtualBox Guest Addition on Linux Preempt RT Kernel

Post by oartigues »

Hi,

I'm using Xubuntu 18.04 LTS as VM Guest (VirtualBox 6.1.28, I've tried with 6.1.30 also).

If I'm using standard Linux kernels, I'm able to install VirtualBox Guest Addition using the sudo ./autorun.sh command from the ISO mounted folder. No issue, working perfectly.

But If I'm using Linux Preempt RT Kernel, impossible to install VirtualBox Guest Addition. I've tried with Kernel 4.16.12-RT5, 5.14-RT19, 5.15.2-RT9. As a result, no shared folder, no mouse...
I've correctly compiled and installed linux-headers and linux-image corresponding to each Prempt RT kernel which are working correctly in standard PC.
The linux distribution is up to date using the sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade commands.
I've tried also to install virtualbox-dkms, dkms and virtualbox-guest-utils without any better result

Is anybody able to reproduce this ?
Is anybody being able to help me to fix this ?

Best regards,

for example in the case of 4.16.12-RT5, here is the result of the vboxadd-setup.log:

Re: Impossible to use VirtualBox Guest Addition on Linux Preempt RT Kernel

Post by fth0 »

I have no personal experience with compiling Linux kernel drivers, but I can make an educated guess:

Some of the compilation errors show a compiler option as their immediate cause (-Werror=incompatible-pointer-types). On my Linux Mint 20 host, the VirtualBox kernel drivers were built successfully, although the VirtualBox GA sources and the Linux kernel headers exhibit the same incompatible pointer type (const keyword missing). That could mean that this Werror option and other compiler options are specific to your Linux RT kernel.

The stricter compiler options on your system probably reveal bugs in the VirtualBox GA sources that go unnoticed otherwise. Please create a ticket in the Bugtracker.

On a separate note, I'm curious why you want to run a RT kernel inside a VirtualBox VM. A significant property of a RT kernel obviously is its real-time property, and a VirtualBox VM is more or less "guaranteed" to break that AFAIU.

Dear fth0,

Thanks for your reply.
I'll create a ticket in Bugtracker accordingly.

To answer your curiousity about why using a RT kernel within a VirtualBox VM, this is just because I'm developping, within a VM, a solution targeting industrial PC using RT kernel. That's why I need a RT kernel on my VM for having the same software environment as per the final PCs.

Best regards,
