iTunes on VM does not like iPad

Followed the instructions from viewtopic.php?f=35&t=82639 to create a USB filter for an iPad, but iTunes did not approve. Oddly enough, the VM itself completely recognized the iPad being connected (I got the "your iPad's currently not charging" upper-right-screen popup, and Image Capture automatically opened. For some reason iTunes had a problem:

It's an iPad mini 2, and I tried it on a 10.9 VM as well as a 10.10 one, both of which came out after the mini 2. Same error. Log's attached (I believe it's for the 10.9 attempt).

Of other interestingness, when I tried on 10.7 VM, I got a different error window:
