USB filter for iPhone fails on mac sierra guest.

I have a macOS guest VM hosted on my Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS. My virtualbox version is "Version 6.0.8 r130520 (Qt5.9.5)". As I understand the guest additions are not available for macOS so I don't have that.
My host machine has 32GB of RAM, the guest OS uses 16GB of it.
I have no problem attaching my usb mouse, usb keyboard and external usb harddrives to the guest OS. But with an iPhone, when I try to attach it to the guest machine through the [devices -> usb -> iphone] menu, the guest machine hangs for a few seconds and then it fails. I get this notification:
"Failed to attach the USB device Apple Inc. iPhone [0702] to the virtual machine VMName."
from the log file, this seems to be the related line:
33:38:58.289730 ERROR [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) aIID={872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed} aComponent={ConsoleWrap} aText={Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR)}, preserve=false aResultDetail=-111
I have come across only vague threads like this on the issue: /viewtopic.php?f=7&t=52838
How can I dig more into this issue? I really need to use the iPhone in my guest machine.
