Problem installing Mountain Lion Guest on Sierra Host, any thoughts?

Postby Paddywack Arts » 1. Jan 2019, 12:18

Hello all and happy 2019!

I'm new to Virtual Box and new the forums so please forgive me if I get something wrong here or appear dim.

I'm attempting to install Mountain Lion as a Guest with Sierra 10.12.6 as the host.
I've previously purchased Mountain Lion so I could download it from my Purchased list on the App Store.
I've located the installESD.dmg and copied it to the desktop for the installation process.

I get an error during the boot up process which reports:

Using 64-bit bootcache playlist
BootCacheControl: Unable to open var/db/BootCache.playlist: 2 No such file or directory

(I have a screenshot, but this is my first post so I can't provide the link yet).

The process pauses for a while but then seemsto boot fine.
The Mountain Lion install disk (InstallESD.dmg) works and the install options appear.
I've checked and I can run Disk Utility, and Safari loads nicely.

Then I start the Mountain Lion installation.
All goes well until the process gets to "Select the disk where you want to install OSX".
No list of disks appears and the dialogue looks incomplete.

(Screenshot available)

I've tried tinkering with a few settings but get the same result.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Am I doing something wrong?

Many thanks
Dave

What format does the download come as? I don't remember purchasing it, but then again I don't think I used the AppStore until 10.9, I was downloading it directly. Thankfully I still have a backup...

The only way I tried/managed to install 10.8 is directly from the DVD/ISO, there was no need to take some extra steps to make it happen. Did you try the simplest method, i.e. to just plug the DVD/ISO and install it like that?

  1. You don't need to post a picture, you can simply describe the situation, especially at that point.
  2. You should be attaching images locally in your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form). Not a lot of people will go to 3rd party sites. Plus, it's more convenient if the image goes along with the message...

Don't. The templates are there for a reason; they work.

Try with the DVD/ISO and if that doesn't work we need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Hello
Thanks for your reply.
It comes as an app.
I've followed instructions in a couple of YouTube vides and elsewhere about finding the disk image within the package (installESD) and watched a video where that works.
Where would I get the full iso of the install disk from?

It does???
According to my notes, only after 10.9 there was a need for an App2ISO script that does this, before that it was an ISO already.

Can you send me the output of the following command?

    ls -alR <10.8>.app
where "<10.8>" is the name of the installer app.

It does...

Screen Shot 2019-01-02 at 21.29.46.png (94.27 KiB) Viewed 1089 times

The instructions that I found and watched being executed involved opening the package contents and finding InstallESD.dmg, copying to the desktop and attaching that to SATA 1
This gets me as far as booted with OSX, and hanging at the dialogue for selecting location.

Can you send me the output of the following command?

ls -alR <10.8>.app
where "<10.8>" is the name of the installer app.

I'm not sure what this means - I guessed at a Terminal command?
Does it need a filepath on there?

If it is indeed a Terminal command I tried a few alternatives - and got:
users-MBP:~ user$ ls -alR Install OS X Mountain Lion.app
ls: Install: No such file or directory
ls: Lion.app: No such file or directory
ls: Mountain: No such file or directory
ls: OS: No such file or directory
ls: X: No such file or directory

users-MBP:~ user$ ls -alR <Install OS X Mountain Lion>.app
-bash: Install: No such file or directory
users-MBP:~ user$

Thanks for helping with this.

This is certainly above my knowledge level.
I did just download

InstallerApp2ISO.sh

But I have no idea how to run it from the Terminal

Which is probably just as well if you say Mountain Lion shouldn't need it.

(I haven't tinkered with a command line since MS:DOS, other than a bit of pasting into Terminal!) :-)

If the path of a file has spaces, you can either enclose the whole thing in quotes:
    ls -alR "/Applications/Install OS X Mountain Lion.app"
or "escape" it using the backslash character:
    ls -alR /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mountain\ Lion.app
or simply enter the first part (including a space after the "alR" part):
    ls -alR
and drag the file from the Finder to the Terminal.

That's why I want the output, so I can try to 1) me fixing, and 2) you testing it. But I don't think the script will work as is, it might need fixing/adjusting.

Better get used to it, sooner rather than later then... ;)

Yay!

I did the simple thing and dragged the app to the terminal.....
I've copied the output. But...
Your message contains 95524 characters. The maximum number of allowed characters is 60000.

So I'm going to put it into the next 2 posts

(Note - this is the app as downloaded from App store not the app that's inside the InstallESD.dmg that I copied from the package contents).

ZIP it!!!
Clear the Terminal output (Cmd+K), run the command, go to the menu "Shell" » "Export Text As... (Cmd+S)", then "Compress" the file and attach it...

Please re-read my last message! You should ZIP your logs. It helps you, it helps us, it helps save a (virtual) tree or two... ;)

It's already late here, so I won't be checking the script until tomorrow at the earliest, but yeah, that's the idea...
