"Not in text mode!" error trying to boot SL guest

Post by anentropic »

I am trying to launch a Snow Leopard Server guest vm. My host is a Macbook Air core i7 running Mavericks and VirtualBox 4.3.16... I believe this combination is allowed. I desperately need to use some old software that only runs under Snow Leopard unfortunately.

I was getting error loading Extension.kext, then I read that due to incompatibility with Core i7 processor I need to use iBoot instead of normal EFI loader, so I tried that route. Now I get this error:

Code: Select all

00:01:54.814958 VGA Sequencer (3C5): SR index 3C4:04
00:01:54.814962 SR00:03 SR01:00 SR02:0F SR03:00 SR04:0A
00:01:54.814981 !!
00:01:54.814982 !! {vgatext}
00:01:54.814982 !!
00:01:54.814985 Not in text mode!
00:01:54.814987 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
00:01:54.815019 emR3Debug: rc=VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT
00:01:55.823310 Changing the VM state from 'RUNNING' to 'GURU_MEDITATION'.
I found this thread mentioning the same issue: #60863 (I'm not allowed to post urls apparently)
...claiming it's fixed in 4.3.16 r95972

but apparently it's not as that's what I am using

my bad.. I had not noticed the iBoot download had resulted in two iso files... I needed to mount the "iBoot-Ivy-Bridge.iso" instead of "iBoot.iso"

I am able to start the installer now without crashing the vm

(installer rejects me with 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer' but that's not a virtualbox problem I guess)

You don't need to use iBoot to load Snow Leopard. You can install directly from the Snow Leopard install disc into VirtualBox, no warez necessary. iBoot is only needed by people who are pirating Snow Leopard and want to install it on a hackintosh or a PC.
