Ok, I know this has been posted before, but none of the answers or the Apple support were definitive.
I have two machine, a 2008 Macbook Pro and a late 2012 Mac mini, both running 10.8.5. I downloaded VB 4.3.0 on the Mac mini and tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit, and got the message about only an i686 CPU being detected. AFAIK I know I am running a 64 bit kernel, but the Apple help just doesn't make it clear how you can be sure. The Macbook Pro is running VB 4.2.16 and installs the Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit just fine. The content of /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist is identical on the two machine (and doesn't say anything about x64). My conclusion is that the Macbook Pro is running x64 kernel by default but the Mac mini isn't, although I find that bizarre, AND, this is what 'uname -a' says:
bash-3.2$ uname -a
Darwin MICKs-Mac-mini.local 12.5.0 Darwin Kernel Version 12.5.0: Sun Sep 29 13:33:47 PDT 2013; root:xnu-2050.48.12~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64
which sure looks x64 to me.
So could this be a bug in VB 4.3.0?

Did you select "Ubuntu 64bit" as OS type in the settings for the VM?

No I didn't, but nor did I do that on the Macbook. Anyway, that does make a difference, so thanks!
